The World Organisation for Animal Health organised a second Conference
on rabies, in collaboration with the World Health Organization {WHO) and
the European Union, which was held in Paris
(27-30
May
2007).
It was a
unique opportunity for veterinarians, clinicians, laboratory researchers of the
public and private sector, and representatives of regulatory authorities in
both animal and public health to share their experiences, confirm their
common commitment, and identify strategies for the elimination of rabies.
Following the presentations and discussions, resolutions were adopted by
the assembly, towards the elimination of rabies not only in Eurasia, but all
over the globe.
This volume presents the proceedings of this Conference, It includes up-to-
date information on rabies epidemiology in man and animals across Europe,
Middle East and Asia, and the most recent data on the rabies virus and its
structure, as well as the basic mechanisms of rabies infection. The
proceedings include presentations on the experiences and opinions of
experts on the prevention and control of rabies in dogs, wildlife and bats, and
the most recent developments in rabies prevention and management in
humans. Other presentations address advances in technologies, diagnosis
and vaccine. Resolutions and recommendations towards the elimination of
rabies are included, in English, French and Russian.
This book is highly valuable to regulatory veterinary services, public health
services, medical and veterinary practitioners, scientists and researchers
interested in combating this neglected disease, which kills over
50,000
people annually, mainly children. Rabies elimination is at hand, through
collaboration between veterinary and human health authorities, political will
and involvement of the community, and application of knowledge as
described in this volume.
