SUMMARY
FoUdore of the Old Believers of Lake
Peipus'
western coast area (Estonia) is an
ethno-confessional version of the common Russian tradition formed in the situa¬
tion of long-term other-language environment.
The collection contains the best examples of texts recorded in
1930-69
and pre¬
served in the Russian FoUdore Fund of the Estonian Literary Museum (Tartu) as
well as the materials of the
2006
expedition organized in the framework of the pres¬
ent publication project. The records of the past years are written. In
2006
modern
equipment has been used for recording.
The introduction of such a significant number of folklore materials into scientific
practice allows broadening and elucidating of currently established notions on the
character of the Russian traditional culture of western Prichudye (Lake
Peipus'
coast
area). Spiritual verses
(folle
songs of religious content), predominantly late, created by
monies and nachetchiks (readers),
stül
actively function in the Old Believer culture.
Many of them have been transferred from generation to generation in a manuscript
form for the last century. Christian legends are not forgotten either, although the
number of plots is not vast. FoUe-tales (especially fairy-tales) are relatively rare. The
repertoire of everyday lyric songs is not particularly rich either, and round dance
(khorovodnye) songs predominate among them. Only the few examples of old ballads
and lingering "dolevye" (destiny) songs have been recorded.
On the other hand, many genres of traditional folklore
stül malee
an important
component of local population's spiritual and everyday life. The rules of religious and
family everyday etiquette, rites, customs and beliefs related to the most important
calendar holidays and household concerns are presented in the collection. The texts
on fishing, which has always been of key significance in the life of Prichudye Old
Believers, are of special interest. Until the mid last century, numerous wedding rites
and customs together with rich complex of songs, groomsman's (druzhka) sayings and
bride's laments had been preserved in this area. The so-called opeval'nye (laudatory)
songs were particularly popular. Birth and christening rites and customs, the means
of magic impact on child's future life are still well-known today. The Old Believers of
Estonia, like their fellows in other Baltic countries and north-western Belarus, ob¬
serve many rules and taboos pertaining to funerals and wakes. The old generation's
memory preserves a lot of rare and original details going back to deep antiquity.
Despite the fact of impoverishment of the folklore tradition, the
folle
spiritual
culture of western Prichudye Old Believers continues its functioning and is worth
of further study.
