MULTINATIONALS,
GLOBALISATION
AND
INDIGENOUS FIRMS IN CHINA
This book examines the impact of multinational companies
value chain strategies on the Chinese economy and
on indigenous firms in China. It shows that the global
business environment has undergone profound changes
since the early
1990s,
leading to an explosion of merger
and acquisitions activity and consequent unprecedented
degrees of concentration in many industries at a global
level. Adopting the practice of systems integration, the
world s leading multinational companies have fundamentally
restructured their value chains across the world, leading to a
process of concentration cascading down through the value
chain. It analyses the value chain strategies and structure
of the leading firms in three different industries
-
aerospace,
beverage and retail
-
and demonstrates the common features
of reorganisation of the value chain. It shows that, as China s
integration into the global economy increases, multinational
companies value chains have deeply penetrated various
sectors across the Chinese economy. It discusses the effects
of these developments on the indigenous Chinese firms and
the Chinese economy. In particular, it explores the effects of
these developments for local Chinese firms, demonstrating
the complexity of the impact on the Chinese firms abilities to
achieve catch-up . The book presents profoundly important
conclusions concerning the impact of multinationals on the
local economy and on indigenous firms, which are applicable to
other developing economies as well as to China.
Chunhang Liu is Associate Professor and Director of the China
Industry Development Research Centre at Beijing University.
China. He is also Senior Research Associate in the Centre of
Development Studies at the University of Cambridge.

This book examines the impact of multinational companies'
