Sciences and Saratov State University named after
N.
G. Chernyshevsky resulted in the first
monograph devoted to biography and scientific heritage of well known Saratov-St. Petersburg-
Leningrad historian, Sergey Nikolayavich Chernov (28.01(9.02).1887, Saratov
- 26.12.1941,
Pushkin, Leningrad
Oblast).
Given monograph meets the interests and scientific expectations
of those historians and researchers who concentrated on Russian social movement and history
of science. This publication combines patterns of biography and historiographical research.
The book represents not only complex analysis of scientific legacy of Nikolay Chernov, who
became one of the classics in the history of Decabrist Movement, but also contains significant
characteristics connected to Chernov s input to the research in the fields of Medieval Russian
History, Saratov Regional History and history of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Chernov s
dispersed and semi-forgotten professional heritage is coming to the reader from the pages of
this monograph.
Authors are tracing professional development of
N.
G. Chernov, when he was with St.
Petersburg University and a member of greater
Petrograd-Leningrad
scientific community
(1910-1920),
hie years with Saratov State University doing his research on Saratov Regional
history. The shining portrait drawn in this book represents Chernov as historian, researcher in
local lore, teacher and a man of strong personality.
It is necessary to stress that despite of strong interest to Chernov s works during the last
several years, reflected in a number of substantial publications by historians from Saratov
and St. Petersburg, this book, contains comprehensive analysis of Chernov s activity and
heritage aspire of some historiographical priority. Authors represents Chernov not only as a
specialist in Russian social thought and social movements of the first quarter of
XIX
Century,
expert in Russian science and technics of
XVIII
Century, historiographer, specialist in local
history, but also first and foremost as one of the most outstanding representative of St.
Petersburg historical school, who continuously, and during the Soviet period, in a contraband

way, brought principles of scientific realism, objectivity and to the new generations of students
and his colleagues historians. Authors believes that conceptual regulations for the book are
interesting and fully justified.
It is also very important to pay attention to the thesis that S.
N.
Chernov was a part of
old , pre-revolutionary school of history and at the same time, as many other young historians
became a part of Soviet science. His hope was to overcome a break up with old culture
through his research and teaching activity. Despite the fact that the bloom of his scientific
career was during the Soviet
1920s,
Sergey Chernov never was a historian-Marxist and never
shared Marxist interpretation of history.
Colleagues and students of Sergey Chernov noted his adherence to principles as a
backbone of his professionalism. Chernov s unbending character, brilliantly described by
the authors of the monograph, proved during the tough period of
1918-1919,
when Chernov s
family was under repressions and
1928,
when he clearly understood his foreignness within
the university elite. Chernov, however, neither fell to a simplification of history in
front
of
his students, nor he was willing to adopt it in accordance to Soviet ideology.
The most shining example of his unbending personality becape apparent in his studying
of Decabrist movement. Unlike his major opponent M. V. Nechkina (she opposed his views
mainly after his decease) who followed anti-historical interpretation of Decabrists just as a
revolutionists and a part of three-stage liberation movement in Russia It is clearly described
in a chapter in the chapter N. S. Chernov

that Chernov,
on his side, stood for historically correct interpretation of Decabrist phenomenon, connecting
it to the conditions of the epoch, European influence, and overall development of Russia
Chernov s contribution in studying Decabrist movement even today represents the most
comprehensive analysis and invaluable endowment to Russian historical science.
