AND REVIVAL PERIOD THEORETICAL VIEWS
ON THE CHARACTER OF THE MODERN
BULGARIAN LITERARY LANGUAGE
This monographic work is the first comprehensive Bulgarian study of the
contributions of the Bulgarian Literary Society (BLS) towards the formula¬
tion of the theoretical framework as a stepping stone for the development of
the Bulgarian literary language in the
19
century and its national recognition.
The role of the BLS is described as important and often crucial in these pro¬
cesses.
The BLS channeled its academic and organizational activities in the field
of the literary language mainly through its magazine Periodichesko
spisaniye (PS), the mouthpiece of the Society. That is why the Society and
the magazine are treated on an equal basis in the work, although the magazine
is more frequently cited as the subject of the research.
For over
40
years the BLS and the PS were the pacesetters in the devel¬
opment of the Bulgarian literary language in two major directions: codifica¬
tion of the grammatical and spelling norms on the national level and theoreti¬
cal discussion of the key issues of the Bulgarian language structure laying the
groundwork for the development of the Bulgarian philology. These activities
of the BLS are of ever-lasting historical and academic importance. This is
also the motivation of the present work.
Key words of the research are: national language, national character, na¬
tional recognition, national unity, national and linguistic unity. These notions
are analyzed in the work, although the author regards them as indisputable
historical realities, similar to the approach taken in most European coun¬
tries, since there is no common definition of nation . However, the intrinsic
connection between language and nation as well as the crucial role of lan¬
guage in the nation-building process are rather evident to require further con¬
templation. On the other hand, during the last years of the 19th century, which
are the focus of this work, the nation-building processes in Bulgaria were
generally regarded as completed.

The monographic work consists of two relatively separate parts united,
however, by common ideas and themes.
Part One looks at some of the theoretical discussions which took place
prior to the establishment of the BLS with an active participation of
Marin
Drinov, one of the founders of the Society. Presented are the theoretical
framework for the basis and development of the Bulgarian literary language
in the
19
century, the specific features and approaches of the so-called liter¬
ary and language schools, the attitude to the literary tradition, the public com¬
mitment and participation over the last decades of the century aimed at pro¬
moting the idea of a national literary language.
Part Two, which brings us to the core of the research, analyzes the con¬
tributions of the BLS towards the recognition of the national character of the
Bulgarian literary language as an official and national language as well as to¬
wards the establishment of the Bulgarian philology. Special attention is paid
to the role of
Marin
Drinov, who also penned the first academic program for
the development of the Bulgarian literary language as a national one.
The research adopts the descriptive analytical approach whereby fac¬
tual material is analyzed against the historical, and sometimes contemporary,
background. In both parts of the work comparisons are made with the devel¬
opment of other literary Slavic, Balkan, and European languages, thus high¬
lighting the typological features and the national character of the Bulgarian
language. As a result, the history of the Bulgarian literary reveals its original¬
ity and peculiarities alongside some common aspects of the history of literary
languages.
