This book is dedicated to the brave bulgarian warriors
To the readers
Four years have passed since
the publication of the book "The Serb-
Bulgarian War of
1885".
Is it a long or
a short time? It has been a too long
period for the readers tempted by the
book. But it has been a short time for
the gathering and processing of the
needed matter and the writing of the
new book.
During the preparation of the
book friends and readers gave me a
lot of pieces of advice and I had to
introduce some changes in the publi¬
cation's structure, which will be kept
in the following books of the series.
The first conspicuous thing is the
changed format. There are practical
and aesthetic reasons for that. A lot of
readers shared the inconvenience of
the too large format of the book, as
the book has been perceived as a
magazine by its size and it is usually
placed by the sellers right there
-
with
the magazines. A lot of people will not
be pleased with this change, because
one chief principle of serial publica¬
tions has been broken
-
to be identi¬
cal in format and volume. In spite of
that, I, being the author, decided to
take the risk, getting the full support of
the publisher. I hope that the changes
would be justified by the larger
.amount of information, which con¬
tributes to enrich the publication.
It was not easy at all to gather
sufficient and trustworthy information
about the five countries participating
in the Balkan War. A large part of the
information published in earlier issues
has not been checked with reliable
sources and it was necessary to look
for information in other sources. It was
one of the main tasks, which I had
assigned to myself and a long time of
these two years was dedicated to
searching for new sources of informa¬
tion. I believe that I have succeeded in
finding interesting information not only
about Bulgaria, but about the other
participant countries as well, which
would be useful in the future for the
authors engaged in research on the
war. A lot of the people, well acquaint¬
ed with the Balkan War, would be sur¬
prised by the discrepancies of some
data about the Bulgarian country and
army over that period. I consider this
to be one of the achievements of this
research, namely -»the conscientious
search for trustworthy sources and
the amendment of some of the dis¬
crepancies, which have been
mechanically rewritten over the years.
Complying with the desire of the
GENERAL INFORMATION
most of the readers, a separate chap¬
ter dedicated to the armament was
made, while structuring the book. I
hope this would make happy the fans
of the armament knowledge, who will
find information about the matter,
which has not been published in
Bulgarian books until now.
This book was aimed at the
achievement of a balance between
the information dedicated to any of the
participating countries and the military
operations. Large publications dedi¬
cated to the war itself have clarified
every detail of the fights. As the aim of
the publication is not to rewrite the
Balkan War history, the military opera¬
tions have been described basically
without going into detail. The main
contribution, which I, being the author,
hope this book has is the war visual¬
ization, so as the contemporary read¬
er, could feel the spirit of that time.
Many of the exclusively precious pic¬
tures, published in the issue have
been granted by private collections
and are shown for the first time. The
maps and schemes, specially worked
out for the book, showing the disloca¬
tion and the structure of the army units
of the countries, participating in the
Balkan War, are something novel and
have not been published until now
either.
To what extent have I succeed¬
ed in my intentions, the reader would
judge and I hope it would not be a
very strict judgement, because my
intensions were noble.
Finally, without making it less
important, in this book I would like to
thank my friends for their help, without
which this publication would not be
possible. Let me make their names
