Chapter
4
The Summer of
34 33
The boy s Uncle Max shows him sights in the world outside Upper Silesia in¬
cluding a momentary glimpse of Hitler riding by in a Mercedes
Benz. All
the
thrilling adventures are numbed when he sees his uncle shout
Heil! Heil!
and
salute
Der Führer.
Chapter
5
Of Flags and Books
45
The boy s mother and father agonize over hanging the Nazi flag from their
window, and the boy agonizes over his part in burning books considered poi¬
sonous by the Nazis.
Chapter
6
Oranges in Brown Paper Bags
57
The fourteen-year-old boy wonders why his Jewish schoolmates are absent on
that November day. Columns of smoke from downtown Buethen distract stu¬
dents and teachers and cause an early dismissal, so the boy runs to the fire and
sees the Jewish businesses being systematically destroyed. He cannot face his
Jewish seatmate.
Chapter
7
August Days
69
The boy, now fifteen, listens to rumors in the town about rationing, and also
listens to his own adolescent fantasies about girls. The Italian ice cream parlor
allows him a chance to experience new flavors of ice cream and femininity.
Chapters War 75
September
1,1939—
war with Poland is launched and the boy can hear the rumble
of bombs just across the border. His father returns from military duty in Po¬
land, and at the welcoming home party the boy s curiosity about women is sud¬
denly turned to a wish to go to war.
Chapter
9
Capture
87
The boy, now a young soldier on the north coast of Africa, reflects on his expe¬
riences in the military while he tries to avoid capture by the Allies and go by raft
to an Italian-held island in the Mediterranean.
Chapter
10
Prisoner Of War
# 8 IG-16855 107
The soldier, now a prisoner, travels by train across Tunisia. He manages to ride
on the roof with two English guards rather than being shut into a boxcar. He
thinks back on his days stationed in France and being welcomed into a French
family.
Chapter
11
Across the Atlantic
121
The prisoners are transferred from the English to the Americans, taken by truck
to the great gray ship, and carried across the ocean
—
lice and all. At the Norfolk
harbor, the lice are liberated and the prisoners are allowed their first warm shower.
Chapter
12
On the Train
139
From Norfolk the prisoners head toward the setting sun in comfortable coach
cars and are served hot meals. But the prisoner must strain his memory of
American geography to imagine where they are going
—
and to wonder how the
war in Europe is coming.
Chapter
13
Camp Huntsville
149
Life in this camp would have been quite comfortable for the young prisoner
were it not for his fellow prisoners who were Nazis. Their jeers and threats
make this an ordeal, especially when he hears of the murder of two other anti-
Nazis. Still he resolves to be his own man, to get a job in the office as a transla¬
tor, and to maintain his friendship with twelve tattooed men.
Chapter
14
Which Way?
167
A two-day train ride takes him and the twelve men with tattoos through endless
scrub-brush country. His limited knowledge of American geography does not
help him determine where he is and where this train is going.
Chapter
15
Camp Fabens
175
At this small camp in Texas, the prisoner s days are filled with picking cotton
and memorizing English vocabulary. His nights are filled with listening to his
radio, reading his dictionary, contemplating the stars, and a one-time outing to a
local football game.
Chapter
16
When Trains Cross Rivers
183
The cotton is picked, Camp Fabens is closed, and the prisoner joins many others
on a train going east. Reflecting on his long personal tradition of spitting into a
river and making a wish, the prisoner is determined to watch for the Mississippi,
spit through the scant inches his window will open, and make a wish to return to
this land as a free man.
Chapter
17
Camp Forrest
191
Tullahoma, Tennessee, the site of a huge camp holding thousands of prisoners
of war, is at once a refreshing setting among tall pines and a fearsome camp
among Nazis who kill anti-Nazis in the middle of the night. Until he is eventu¬
ally put in an anti-Nazi compound, the prisoner fears for his life every night and
finds solace by retreating into memories of childhood in the forests of Germany.
Chapter
18
Survival
199
Nine months after the end of the war, the prisoners are sent by train to New York
and to a troop ship to be returned to Germany. A rough journey is made worse
by the news that the German harbor is full and that the ship will dock in France.
His fears are realized when boxcars carrying the prisoners are met by bayonet-
bearing French soldiers escorting them to a prison camp of bare ground, barbed
wire, and starvation rations supplemented with handfuls of grass. After two
months he is able to get a job as a translator in the camp office where his life
improves and he is promised an exact release date.
Chapter
19
Another Beginning
207
In the American Zone of Germany, the young man is discharged as a German
soldier and released as a prisoner of war, but how will he earn a living? His
English skills help him find profitable work in the Black Market. With the help
of a cousin, he finds his mother and finds a job near her as a farmer s hired
man.
..
which he leaves in haste.
Chapter
20
Post-War Years and Beyond
215
He chooses to become a skilled laborer, a bricklayer, which requires a two-year
apprenticeship. Finishing this, he applies for a job as translator for the Military
Government. Later he meets Captain Ralph Cramer who invites him to come
and live in the US.
