The land of
Dobrzyń, Kalisz,
Cuiavia,
Sieradz,
and
Poznań
(in the north¬
ern part called
Krajna
and
Pałuki)
were assigned a status of borderland
of country and partitions between, Greater Poland,
Pomerania
and Mazovia.
This borderland character deepened even more during the times of parititions
in Poland. After
1815
the lands of Cuiavia,
Dobrzyń
and Greater Poland were
divided between Russia and Prussia. In the interval between wars
(1918-1939)
the lands comprising the Greater Poland

were a part of the voivodships as follows: Warsaw,
Poznań,
and since
1939
Łódź
as well. During
1939-1945
they were incorporated into the Third Reich joining
a province

Western Prussia. Living in bordering

administrative mattters but also of various aspects of social and cultural life.

graphic changes, started in the second half of
XIX
century, became faster
and faster. During the first years of independence of the Second Republic,
a considerable amount of Jews left together with the German. Most of the
communities were extensively depopulated. The few who stayed, where the
ones who had difficulties in adaptation to new conditions,
lhe
administration
reform in Jewish communities of
Poznań
and
Pomerania,
which was introduced
in early thirties, prevented the remnants of the communities infrastructure
from a final decapitalising, and their members were provided with a possibil¬
ity of social and religious help. The new enlarged communities in the area
(seated in Bydgoszcz,
Inowrocław
and Szubin) created a posibility to take an
active part in political life. Since
1933
the ties between local German Jews and
Germans were gradually declining. However, the role of the Jews coming from
Russian and (though more rarely) Austrian partition, becomes more and more
significant. Apart from the division into the local and the influx Jews, Zion¬
ists of various movements became the dominant political force. The influence
of the orthodox and the leftists were marginal.
In the communities of the former Russian partition
(Kutno, Lipno, Nies¬
zawa, Rypin and Włocławek)
changes in population were not that spectacular.
A noticeable phenomenon was a slow migration of Jewish people from the
less numerous communities
(2
to
3
thousand people) to those more numer¬
ous.
Kutno
and
Włocławek
were the most frequently chosen communities.
The system of Jewish authorities introduced during the WWI, was reformed
during the first months of the existence of Poland and in this form survived
till September
1939.
Political life of majority of the communities was marked
with constant clashes of orthodox against Zionists and leftist fractions. Many
of the communities, the less numerous and placed in longer distance from
the Russian
-
German border in particular, were dominated by the followers
of
Aguda
or independent orthodox Hasids. In towns where you could find
small factories, the influence of groups connected with Bund, Poalej
Syjon
(Zion) or Hitachduth was definitely more noticeable. Regardless geographical
location, or employment structure in a particular community, the followers
of nationalistic idea grew in singificance. Mostly they represented the general
Zionism, religious ( Mizrachi ) or leftist ( Poalej
Syjon Prawica , Hitachduth ,
Poalej
Syjon Lewica ).
During
1930s
the radical movement represented by
the Zionist
-
Revisionist followers became more significant. The Folkists had
some minor influence, mostly in
Kutno
district. Followers of assimilation and
radicals from Communist Party of Poland played marginal role in social and
political life of majority of the communities.
Summary
455
Both post-German and post-Russian partition Jewish communities were
very able in creating social and economic institutions. In each and every com¬
munity, even the smallest one, there existed a few such organisations. In the
larger ones
-
between ten and twenty, while in the biggest ones a few dozen.
Each organisation s characteristic was different in complexity, but still following
the same infrastructure; a synagogue, beth hamidrash, ritual baths, religious
societies, and schools. They had one common feature which was similar so¬
cial
-
professional structure and considerable share in economic life. Jews
dominated some branches of trade, manufacturing, services and transport. The
fates of all the communities after
1939
were not unlike either. In post-German
districts as well as
Lipno,
and Rypin Jews were exterminated or displaced by
the end of
1939.
In the remaining districts Holocaust had been preceeded
by moving people to the distant parts of General Government (till spring
of
1940),
concentrating them in ghettos or Jewish districts (spring
-
autumn
1940),
gradual displacing to ghetto in
Łódź
(autumn
1940 -
spring
1942)
and
work (concentration) camps
(1939-1942).
Those who stayed alive were being
gradually exterminated from December
1941
till spring and summer of
1942
in Kulmhof
-
in the village of
Chełmno
by
Ner
