JevOs of the
Zamość
region
in
1864-1915
Summary
The study concerns Jewish community which used to inhabit the
Zamość
region in
the years
1964-1915.
The time limit and the scope of the research have not been chosen at
random. The selected area covers a part of the Lublin guberniya (province), and especially
its four districts which are referred to as the
Zamość
region in scientific literature (nowa¬
days situated within the administrative borders of the Lublin voivodship). The opening
date is connected with political events of the 1860s when significant changes occurred
in the Kingdom of Poland. These transformations had an effect on the administrative
structure, organisation of national and local government, as well as ownership relations.
The bestowing of property carried out in the Kingdom in
1864
did not include Jewish
population, and later amendments in Russian law did not give Jews the right to land (acts
of
1887
and
1891).
Jewish population was more affected by the abolishment of manorial
relations in towns in
1866.
This abolishment was especially important for inhabitants of
private towns laden with numerous services for their owners, and less significant for other
urban centres. The closing date of the monograph is related to the end of the Russian do¬
minance in the Kingdom. The study does not discuss issues from the period of the Great
War or the following years until the regaining of independence by Poland in
1918.
This is
due to the fact that many processes and transformations which took place in the analysed
region during the World War I require separate research as a result of a different situation
of civilians. The study deals only with the first part of the war and new conditions caused
by a change of government
-
invader s to occupier s.
In spite of substantial literature on the 19th century and World War I, so far there has
been no monographic dissertation on the Jewish population inhabiting the
Zamość
region.
The book aims to present life of the Jewish population in the analysed territory. The aut¬
hor examines various areas of life, vital aspects of economic, cultural and philanthropic
activities, as well as origins and development of political parties and involvement of Jewish
population in them. The study is based on source materials, supplemented by scientific
literature, press articles and papers in Yiddish (pinkas zikkaron or
sef
er zikkaron, in
Hebrew
jizker
buch),
published after War World II by Holocaust survivors, referring to particular
places which were to be commemorated. In the present study these are publications on
Zamość, Biłgoraj
and
Tomaszów Lubelski.
The
Zamość
region, similarly to the Lublin guberniya, was an area of a characteristic
ethnic mosaic. There were Orthodox groups here, as well as Chassidism centres
-
e.g. in
Biłgoraj
or
Tomaszów Lubelski,
but also a more progressive community in
Zamość.
Eve¬
ryday life of Jewish population was regulated by traditional religiousness, and progress
and secularisation were adopted much slower than in bigger cities. This rather regular
352
Summer}
lifestyle was destroyed by World War I which caused impoverishment of the population,
as well as migrations and flights from approaching troops of the Central Powers. The
years of the war led to changes in distribution of Jewish population and in the ethnic and
religious structure.
The goal of the study is to present various undertakings of provincial Jews who in their
initiatives (e.g. cultural) sometimes even overtook local Christian population and citizens
of Lublin. Apart from the economic, political, cultural, and ethnic relations issues, the
study raises the problem of conversion, rather scantily discussed in scientific literature.
While Polonized communities, living mostly in Warsaw, attempted to enhance their social
status through conversion, Jewish inhabitants of small towns and villages were not much
interested in changing their religion. In the period of national uprisings hopes for better
life and for improved social status became the incentive for conversion in Jewish shtetls.
The present study
-
a contribution to research on Jewish history at the turn of the 19th
с
in the territory annexed by Russia in partitioned Poland
-
does not claim to depict a com¬
plete view of the situation in the
Zamość
region of the examined period. The monograph,
with its territorial and chronological limits, does not exhaust fully the discussed topic. The
scope of the subject and a great number of source materials concerning the Kingdom of
Poland and the territory annexed by Russia encourage to continue the research.
