Summary
The monograph Family Lives addresses
io
features of
Albanian family living from the beginning of 2o century up to
1990.
It concentrates in the rural areas of the inhabited Western Lowlands
of Northern Albania, from the riverside of Buna up to the valley of the
river
ïshëm.
The book gives a panorama of family life, of its internal
composition and organization, of the aspects of the family life
following the birth of the individual up to his
/
her death, also it
argues on the causes of the testified state of family living.
The Western Lowlands of Northern Albania lie alongside the
Adriatik
Sea, from the lake of
Boti
up to the river Shkumbin. The
rivers which traverse the area, divide it into the following units: the
fields around the lake ofShkodra, the fields between Shkodra and
Lezha, the fields between rivers
Drini
and
ïshëm
and the fields
between rivers
ïshëm
and Shkumbin. The fields between
Drini
and
Shkumbini are divided into five areas which hold in different
ethnographic features and can not be grouped with any other
ethnographic unit. They are composed by Bregu
і
Bums, Bregu
і
Drinit,
Zadrima,
Bregu
і
Matit, Fusha
e Milotit.
While the fields
around the lake ofShkodra can be grouped altogether with
Malësia e
Madhe, and the fields between
ïshëm
and Shkumbin can be grouped
altogether with
Gegëria.
The dwellings of these fields are ancient. A part of them are
found mentioned in Cadastre ofShkodra in
1416 - 1417.
A part of the
villages of the fields are mentioned by reports of
lì
century. In
14
century the area of Bregu
і
Matit is found mentioned in terms of a
region. The same is for
Zadrima
which is found mentioned as a region
in 15th century. These fields have always been linked with the cities
such as Shkodra, Lezha, Kruja
andDurrësi.
The old inhabitants of these areas are locally called as
anas . Another group of inhabitants are the populations who came
from
Malësia e
Madhe and these are called
malësorë .
Another
group of inhabitants came from Mirdita and as such are called as
142
Jetë
familjäre
mirditorë or katundarë .
There are other smaller groups of
populations who settled here from Dukagjin,
Puka
etc.
As such the configuration of the habits of these inhabitants is a
composure which has resulted from their different places of origins
and different religious belonging. Despite this variety, the inhabitants
went on at very good terms with each other, and religious conflicts
were very rare in this area.
The accumulation of the necessary material for this book and
also the investigations are based upon expeditions which were
conducted for ten consequent years, from
1975
to
1985.
A part of their
results were presented in articles in scientific periodicals. The study
relies also onto official statistics found in the archives of Local
Executive Comities, Popular Councils, of Registry Offices ofShkodra,
Lezha, Kruja. These statistics are presented through tables and
graphics alongside the book. A huge help was endowed by the
questionnaires fulfilled by villagers of different professions, civil
statuses, age-groups and genders. Other studies in the same area also
in other areas were used for comparative purposes in terms of time
and space. Into consideration have been taken also the worfis of
authors such as Nopsza,
Hahn,
Durham, Hasluck etc. On my opinion,
these works were characterized by a descriptive approach and, many
times, by overgeneralizations of a certain habit for the whole Albania.
The whole material was recently subject of revaluation by me,
so to update it in accordance with new conditions and perspectives of
post-socialist Albania.
From the 2nd World War up to
1990,
the Albanian family life
experienced transformations which can be grouped as follows: the
natural course of family progressing in the new conditions and the
imposed change under the schemes of the state political dictate. Here
of a huge importance was the agrarian reform and the
collectivization. The book encompasses a huge problematic of family
life, considering at their core the change in the economic sphere. It
concentrates in the problems of family and marriage relations, of
psychology, habits, rites and ceremonials. Describing these changes
in the family living of this period, this book may serve as a reference
point to comparative study of family transformations after
1990
in
Albania. By the other side, the aspects of family life are of great
Jetë
familjäre
143
interest as the family plays the central role in the development of
society. Also many of them hold in elements which serve as a
representation of the ethnic identity. They indicate also the level of
economic life and culture of the holders, their psyche and way of
living. These aspects indicate also the relationship that our people
have had with other neighboring peoples. They mirror also the
differences between the Albanian highlands and lowlands, between
village and town and semi-urban areas.
The habits presented in this book appear to be always in
transformation. Some of them are testified to have lost alongside the
period of time this study has taken into consideration. Some of them
were fanatically conserved. In general terms these features of family
living, were melted altogether, integrated. This was mainly based on
the fact that the inhabitants who came from high mountainous areas
brought with them habits which corresponded to regions of a similar
economic and social life and of a similar collective psyche. The new
comers shared similarities with the old inhabitants of the areas
towards which they moved. Additionally, the newly came populations
continued to fanatically preserve the links with their places of origins,
which by the other side helped the
survivance
of their imported way of
living. This is expressed in the orientation of arrangements of
marriages, in the collective participation in ceremonials in cases of
death, marriage etc.
After the 2nd World War, the creation of new economic and
social, political and cultural conditions brought about a huger
unification of the habits related with family life, incorporating them
into the socialist culture. Anyhow, the habits of the family lives of
these areas appear as to belong to various periods of times. We have
testified features of a pagan stratum, such as for example the
separation from the dead, the lament, some rites of burial, ritual food
for the dead etc. In the case of marriage ceremonials, we may mention
habits which are related with the prosperity in family, with
inheritance, with the desire to have as many male inheritors as
possible. In addition, in this category we can mention magical doings,
which hold in very ancient elements.
There are other features of family life also which exist as
composure of various worldviews, mainly paganism with Islamic and
144 _____
Jetë
familjäre
Christian religions.
And there exists a third category of other features
which purely belong to one of the before mentioned religions, such as
for example the baptizing of the child, circumcising of the male child,
a variety of commemorations of the dead etc.
After the 2m World War, and especially after the year
1967,
many of the before mentioned aspects disappeared as a result of the
frontal war against religious beliefs, pagan or monotheist, against
cultic places, as for example churches and mosques, and against
religious clergymen.
The non-material cultural features although appear to be
linked with the material ones, also appear to have a relative
independence from them. The villagers, consciously or unconsciously,
link themselves with the chains of the inherited habits, many of which
may play only an amusing function in the whole structure of
ceremonial events. Due to this psychological attachment of the
villagers with the local habits, the latter seems to evolve at a very slow
pace.
