THE PEOPLE OF NEW FRANCE
This book surveys the social history of New France. For more
than a century, until the British conquest of
1
759-60,
France
held sway over a major portion of the North American con¬
tinent. In this vast territory several unique colonial societies
emerged, societies which in many respects mirrored
anden
regime France, but also incorporated a major Aboriginal
component.
Whereas earlier works in this field represented pre-
Conquest Canada as entirely white and Catholic, The People
of New France looks closely at other members of the society
as well, including black slaves, English captives, and the Chris¬
tian Iroquois of the mission villages near Montreal. The arti¬
sans, soldiers, merchants, nobles, and priests who congre¬
gated in the towns of Montreal and Quebec are the subject
of one chapter. Another examines the special situation of
French-regime women living under a legal system that rec¬
ognized wives as equal owners of all family property. The
author extends his analysis to French settlements around
the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi Valley, and to
Acadia and
île Royale.
Greer's book, addressed to undergraduate students and
general readers, provides a deeper understanding of how
people lived their lives in New France.
Allan
gréer
is a professor in the Department of History at
the University of Toronto. He is the author of The Patriots
and thePeoph: The Rebellion
0/1837
in Rural Lower Canada and
Peasant, Lord, and Merchant: Rural Society in Three Quebec Par¬
ishes and the co-editor of Colonial Leviathan: State Formation
in Mid-Nineteenth-Century Canada. His work has won several
awards, including the Prix Lionel-Groulx, the John Porter
Award, and the John
A. Macdonald
Prize. |
