The XIXth century in the history of
Daghestan
people can be
considered as gold. Heroic fight of highlanders for their independ¬
ence, appearance of muridism as ideological basis of resistance,
rash political changes, promotion of remarkable leaders, creation
of splendid literature and written culture monuments, joining of the
region to the leading European civilization give grounds for such
statement.
The most notable historic event was, certainly, the Cauca¬
sian war, which ended for colonial wars by the most peaceful way
-
an agreement. But the

August,
1859
mustn t be considered
as the date of termination of highlander s liberation war on the
North Eastern Caucasus. A new stage began, forms, methods and
ideology of which were conditioned by the new political situation in
the region, that resulted in eighteen rebellions and mass actions
(from
1859
till
1877)
that came in history as examples of courage
and heroism,
The introduction of new administrative, judicial systems re-
movement of political barriers in the economy which, by plan of the
authorities, along with hard inner policy, should have suppressed
the highlanders hadn t a desirable effect.
Russia s expansion policy, expressing in gradual taxes in¬
crease, requirements of execution of obligations, in seizure of
lands, settlement of Russian colonizers, attempts to convert the
population to Christianity, in measures to reduce the influence of
Islam and clergy on highlanders, along with mistakes in manage¬
ment, unsettled land question disgruntled the daghestanees. For¬
eign policy influence, the promise of help stimulated insurgents.
Highlanders, who had never exercised the foreign domination,
sharply and negatively received the new political reality. These all
the motives of highlander s
anticolonial
movement of

preserved, and in some aspects they were aggravated, which re¬
sulted in disappointment of population in the whole Russian gov¬
ernment system. The hard, purposeful inner policy of Russia in
Daghestan
didn t assist in suppression of the region.

Chechnya, and even-tempered, reasonable, calmly keeping its hot
heart

The determining roie in preparation, organization, conduct¬
ing of mass actions in

played the daghestanees clergy, that
was always ready to risk their lives for freedom and reconstruction
of true shariat in the mountains, and to take the heavy burden of
rebellion (G. Guzunov).
The clergy in
Daghestan, as
educated part of society close
to masses, the keeper of traditional Islamic valuables, the spiritual
pivot of people, had an unquestionable authority and respect in the
mountains that especially can be said about its superior part. The
clergy was the organic part of society, executing the intercon¬
nected functions of teachers, secretaries, judges, enlighteners si¬
multaneously.
The traditional
Daghestan
arab-Moslem
system of education,
represented by macktabs and madrasas under the direction of
mullahs and alims, allowed to provide receivership and develop¬
ment of knowledge, high level of literally in society, and was able
to prepare prominent alims.
The width of studied sciences, subjects and books that cov¬
ered all spheres of knowledge known to Moslems, analysis of liter¬
ary works of the local authors allows to draw a conclusion about
the level of
Daghestan
scientists and the education in
Daghestan,
about quite high standard of knowledge of hlghlander clergy. In
spite of the fact, that the XIXth century is marked by actualization of
knowledge, first of all appeared in historical works and law, it must
be noted that the knowledge was scholastic and torn away from
-baity, greatly lagged behind the European, had some defects, that
however began to reveal with penetration of capitalist relations
only. Realizing the power of clergy and its importance and the role
of Islam in
Daghestan
society, tsarist administration resorted a
complex of measures, detected on reduction of influence of clergy
and religion factor on masses.
The open, not veiled fight of authorities with clergy and at¬
tack on the spiritual-moral basis of lives of umma pushed the reli¬
gious leaders to actions.
The rebellion of
1877
was purposefully prepared and was, in
considerable degree, the result of actions of spiritual leaders.
The degree of participation in directing the movement of
clergy representatives in different parts of
Daghestan
depended on
concrete objective historical conditions.

Sufizm, naksnbandiya
tankat
in particular was vastly popu¬
larized in the region. The highlanders, having no possibilities for di¬
rect military resistance to Russian expansion, found their consola¬
tion in spiritual resistance, that tarikat made possible.
Nakshbandiya, having a clear subordination system of
murid
to shaych could give the organizing base to liberation movement.
The important role in the rebel played the personality of Ab-
durahman
-
Hadzhy as-Suguri, nakshbandiya tarikat s shaych, the
most respected daghestanee, whose name became the banner of
the movement, whose authority provided broad public support.
Common stimulating motives unify of interests goals and
problems unified
-
the most part of
Daghestan
society in fight the
freedom.
The Rebellion of
1877,
as it was already noted, was caused
by a complex of social, economic, larval, mental, religious, inner
and foreign policy reasons, Having significant national-liberatory
essence, the ideology of the rebellion was presented in a religion
shell: for liberty and shariat!
The ideological, legal basis of the movement became the in¬
stitute of Jihad in Islam
-
liberation from the authorities of infidels
(non-Moslems) (in this case).
Organizational structure of
Imamat
of
1877
repeated theo¬
retically the system of
Shamiľs
Imamat
and must have been its
organic confirmation the corroboration of which is the election of
imam and Council of learned men, administrative and tax systems,
military organization and tactics of combat actions.
Technical and quantitative superiority of Russian troops, un¬
coordinated actions of highlanders and scatteredness of their
powers faults in leadership of rebellion, demoralization, owing to
frequent failures become the reasons of the default of the delegate
of highlanders.
