SUMMARY
Ethnic Music* Tradition and Value
The ethnic music in Moldova on the left bank of the
river Prut represents a consistent historical and socio-artistic
document, accumulated, stratified and developed successively
in the spiritual patrimony of the people. The song, as the
first act of musical-artistic manifestation in the history of the
spiritual culture of humankind, was present and accompanied
the human beings in their main moments of life and activ¬
ity. Considering the above perspective, our traditional music
expresses, in products of the finest kind, the deepest feelings,
thoughts, and aspirations of the autochthonous conscience,
the state and the material life of the community, the concept
about the world and society, the mentality of the community,
its language, history, the ethno-geographic framework in which
it dwells. At the same time it imposes itself as an important
means of artistic communication. Accumulating and gradually
perfecting the means of specific expression, the ethic music
goes alongside the whole history of our people.
Being born out of its own spirit to express feelings, the
collective sonorous art such as the ethnic traditional music
was and still remains the most wide-spread and accessible
genre of musical art, which also fundamentally marks the
cultural identity of the autochthonous communities. Unlike
the academic culture, the oral traditional music, by its mere
concept, has involved the collectivity in the process of crea¬
tion, execution, conservation, and its perpetuity in time even

in the earliest stages of society. As a result, in the course of
millennia, the artistic patrimony of the kinfolk has collected
a thesaurus of cultural goods of a different nature (musi¬
cal, literary, choreographic) and of a varied morphological
structure and syncretism. This thing confirms once again
the value, the great wealth and the diversity of the spiritual
goods that compose the treasure of the ethnic music in the
Prut-Nistru space.
The present publication is intended to offer better knowl¬
edge of the autochthonous sonorous stratus and its more
complete exploration on the cognitive, cultural, artistic and
scientific scales. In order to meet the given objective our
approach solicited the research of such issues as the origin
and evolution of the traditional musical creation in the given
cultural space, the decoding of the meaning of some artistic
categories of the past and present, as well as their relation
with the contemporary epoch.
For a better understanding of the investigated phenom¬
enon, it was necessary to deepen some aspects that deal with
the means of expression that are found at the basis of the
traditional music of Moldova. The material included in the
present work attempts at meeting this desideratum.
The study contains an introductory part entitled Preliminar¬
ies, which treats the technical notion of folklore (recently
also called profound culture) from the conceptual point of
view in the light of the latest estimations of science in the
given field. The up-to-datedness of this stratum of culture,
which contributes to the closeness of different social, ethnic
and other types of groups, also finds reflection here.
Chapter I, Traditional Music as a Socio-Cultural Phenom¬
enon, reveals the characteristics of this type of art as an oral
cognitive and communicative human activity. The approaches in
the given chapter take into consideration the five fundamental
concepts of a logic character, valid of the investigated field, and

which guide the contemporary ethno-musicology. The internal
factors that contribute to the evolution of the language of the
traditional music have also been concisely analyzed.
Chapter II, Musical Manifestations in the Spiritual Life
of the Autochthonous Modern Community Connected with
Events: Genres and Repertoires, debates the general pecu¬
liarities of the musical artistic creation characteristic of the
calendar cycle. The semantic, ethnographic and the musical
sides of the repertoire included both in the winter holiday
customs and in the artistic manifestations in the period
of spring and summer, typical of the traditional culture in
Moldova, are further analyzed in the chapter. In both cases,
priority is given to musical analyses of the products attested
in the investigated area.
Traditional Musical Categories and their Functioning
within Manifestations Unconnected with Special Events are
analyzed in Chapter III. Alongside with children s creation
(the whole categorical ensemble and its morphological ele¬
ments), special attention is paid to
doina
—
the reference
song of the autochthonous spirituality. The author undertakes
analyses regarding the definition, classification, etymology
and the origin of
doina
as a term and as a musical genre.
The chapter also outlines some premises referring to the
origin and the evolution of the rhythmic-melodic configura¬
tions of
doina,
revealing, at the same time, the basic musical
characteristics of this lyric genre.
The main conclusions of the study, which envision the
present state of Moldovan traditional music and some ten¬
dencies in its evolution, are formulated in the Conclusion.
In order not to stick strictly only to theory, the author
makes references, in the limits of need, to musical samples
to illustrate the formulated ideas.
