Etymology and Nomenclature
The origins of the words associated with gunpowder weapons are unfortunately
clouded in mystery.
O F G
Hogg in Artillery: its origins, heyday and decline explains the
possible, and very diverse, origins of some of the more common words.2 Artillery and
Ordnance have no single convincing origin, but cannon on the other hand seems to be
derived from the Latin word
canno,
а
reed or tube.
If the origin of key words Is obscure, the myriad names for individual types of
ordnance is utterly confusing, especially in the early years. The name does no so much
indicate a type of gun, but a group of guns designed for a specific purpose. Guns were
the individual products of a craftsman s workshop. Gunnery manuals do indeed
provide detailed instructions on classes of gun, but more importantly they instruct the
putative gunner on how to find out about his gun.
In
1590
John Sheriffe distinguished between three types of guns in use at the
time:3
•
Those that are most serviceable for battery being within
80
paces of their mark
which is trie chief of their force.
•
Those that are good and serviceable to be mixed with the above ordnance for
battery to pierce being crossed tuith the rest as also fit for castles, forts and walls to be
planted for defence.
•
Those that are good and serviceable for the field and most ready for defence.
These might be described as heavy, medium and field artillery. To which he might have
added a fourth class, the numerous small anti-personnel weapons, particularly
shipboard guns, that went under a variety of names, but most appositely murtherers.
