Summary
In the present monograph a collection of nineteen legal acts is pre¬
sented, consisting of regulations and instructions issued for the manage¬
ment, personnel and inmates of St. Lazarus Hospital in Gdansk (Lazareth
oder Pockenhaus).
It is undoubtedly the most impressive collection of
hospital law in the area of Northern Poland.
St. Lazarus hospital was founded in the New Town around year
1400,
originally as St.
Roch
hospital and then, about year
1492
transformed
into
Pockenhaus -
a house for the suffering from pox. Another name
was St. Lazarus hospital ( Lazaret ).
Unlike other
Gdańsk
hospitals of medieval origins, which, in the
course of time, changed mainly into alms-houses, there were five kinds
of activities in St. Lazarus hospital. First, St. Lazarus hospital functioned
as a hospital. Second, the foundation took care of poor people. Third,
people who wanted to buy their way to stay there on account of their age
and in order to have care in their advanced years were admitted. Fourth,
St. Lazarus hospital dealt with the custody over children, especially or¬
phans. Fifth, there was a pharmacy in the hospital, giving service both
to the ill of the foundation and of the town.
In the
70s
of the 18th century there happened a financial crisis of
public funds in
Gdańsk,
which was reflected in an unfavourable way
also in the activity of St. Lazarus hospital. The improvement of financial
278
Summary
condition of the institution came only as the result of political and eco¬
nomic stability after
1813.
Foundations management consisted of
gover
ners
(Vorsteher).
A chief
steward
{Hofmeister),
a chief stewardess
{Hofmutter)
and a number of
hospital servants were subordinate to governers: a carer of the ill
{Krank¬
en
Mutter), a food office servant
(Speise Knecht),
basket servants
(Korb
Knechten),
health office servants
(Heil Knechten),
a bell ringer
(Glockner),
a porter
(Thorschlüßer),
a baker (Becker), swineherds (Schweinhirtschen),
a carpenter (Schnitzger or Sargmacher), a cook of the grand kitchen
(Köchin
in
der großen Küche),
a cook of the small kitchen
(Köchin in der kleinen
Küche),
a barmaid
(Schenckeriń),
a taylor (Haxel-Schneider), a teacher
(Schulmeister),
a school minder
(Schul
Mutter), a cow girl (Milch-Magd).
Furthermore a doctor (Doctor) was employed in St. Lazarus hospital, as
were a barber
(Barbier,
later a surgeon
-
Chirurgus), a barbers journey¬
man
(Barbier Geselle),
a pharmacy governor (Prouisor
der Apothequé).
Spiritual services were performed by a preacher
(Prediger).
Managing of such a complex organism, as St. Lazarus hospital was,
was the reason to create a number of regulations for governors, hospital
servants and inmates over the course of centuries. Up to now
19
such
legal acts have been found.
14

dation,
especially from the side of organisation and tasks of particular
offices.
Later on, regulations of
1610
were divided into separate legal acts for
particular offices. At least from
1701
regulations for the chief steward and
the housekeeper were distinguished, still later it was divided into separate
regulations for the chief steward and separate regulations for the chief
stewardess. In the 18th century other offices also received regulations and
instructions, unfortunately exact dates are unknown. The last legal act
to prescribe management of St. Lazarus hospital are regulations of
1779
aiming to eliminate the results of the foundation financial crisis.
The collection of legal acts of
Gdańsk
St. Lazarus hospital contained
in this monograph constitutes the only so significant selection of hospital
law in
Gdańsk
region. The uniqueness of the collection lies also in keep¬
ing relatively wide time frame (17th-
Iß 1
centuries). It is an extremely
important period of time. The type of hospital as we know it from the
Middle Ages, i.e. first of all an alms-house and to a lesser extent a place
for treatment evolves in front of our eyes towards a hospital as we know it
today, thanks to the presented regulations and instructions. It is a unique
phenomenon, not only at
Gdańsk
scale. This revolution can be traced
at several planes.
First, the described documents illustrate the division between the ill
admitted for treatment and the inmates admitted due to poverty or those
who bought their way in order to secure their advanced years. This step
is a starting point for another step: limitation and then total elimination
of admittance of life inmates.
Second, we have a possibility to observe changes of health care sys¬
tem in St. Lazarus hospital, gradually expanding the scope and quality of
medical services. At the beginning of the 17th century only a barbers jour¬
neyman was involved in medical care together with the carers of the ill.
At the beginning of the 19th century there were two doctors, a jour¬
neyman, a surgeon, a pharmacy governor and carers of the ill in St. La¬
zarus hospital.
Third, we can watch the creation of a method to record medical docu¬
mentation in its initial, primitive form.
Summary
281
The uniqueness of the collection of St Lazarus hospitals regulations
and instructions lies also in documenting of the care taken of mentally
ill in
Gdańsk.
There are not many other data about this subject and the
mentioned legal acts devote relatively much attention to this issue.
Relics of
Gdańsk
hospital law contained in this monograph and cre¬
ated for St. Lazarus hospital, called also
Pockenhaus,
constitute an excep¬
tional set of documents. Their profound and thorough analysis should
help to describe the phenomenon of development of modern science of
hospital management where
Gdańsk
example should serve as a basis for
comparison with other analogous institutions in Poland and in Europe.

Summary
281
The uniqueness of the collection of St Lazarus hospitals regulations
and instructions lies also in documenting of the care taken of mentally
ill in
Gdańsk.
There are not many other data about this subject and the
mentioned legal acts devote relatively much attention to this issue.
Relics of
Gdańsk
hospital law contained in this monograph and cre¬
ated for St. Lazarus hospital, called also
Pockenhaus,
constitute an excep¬
tional set of documents. Their profound and thorough analysis should
help to describe the phenomenon of development of modern science of
hospital management where
Gdańsk
example should serve as a basis for
comparison with other analogous institutions in Poland and in Europe.
