This is the first book to deal solely with Virginia Woolf s non-fiction writing from
a historical and theoretical perspective. It covers comprehensively and in detail the
essays and journalism of this writer of enduring popular and scholarly interest.
Containing original and enlightening research, it establishes the significance of
Woolf s non-fiction to discussions of her importance as a writer, argues for the
relevance of journalism and the essay to discussions of modernism, and re-
examines the relationship between gender and writing as manifest in non-fictional
prose. It naturally engages with current debates as to the distinction between high
and low culture, the role of feminist literary criticism and the relationship between
literature and the historical circumstances of its production.
Woolf s
many non-fiction roles are explored: as juvenile journalist, literary jour¬
nalist, reviewer, autobiographer and essay writer. Brosnan examines Woolf s
ambivalent attitude to these roles, including her extreme distaste for journalists,
and the way in which she uses them as vehicles for literary criticism and for a mode
of expression as a woman writer. This examination reveals much about the whole
shape of Woolf s imagination and style, related to her fiction as well as non-fiction
works.
Leila Brosnan was educated at the Universities of New South Wales, Australia,
and Edinburgh, where she completed a PhD on Virginia Woolf s non-fiction. She
has taught at the Universities of Edinburgh and Salford, and has published articles
and reviews on Virginia
Woolf
and
Katherine
Mansfield, literature and journalism,
and novelists of the
1920s.
She currently lives in London and works for the Court
Service.
