SERBS IN AMERICA AND THEIR
PERIODICAL PUBLICATIONS
Serb immigration to the United States of America began
in the early nineteenth century. By the middle of the century
there were small communities in port cities, such as New
York, Boston and especially New Orleans. During the Gold
Rush in California old as well as new immigrants established
a thriving community in San Francisco, from where many
continued north to Alaska. The second wave of Serb immi¬
grants settled mainly in and around industrial areas and min¬
ing centers; Pittsburgh, Hazelton, Chicago,
Butte, Anaconda,
Gary, Detroit, Cleveland, etc.
The first Serb immigrants that settled in America came
from the Adriatic coast: the Bay of
Kotor
and the area known
as
Paštrovići.
They were experienced seafaring people and
together with Croatian Dalmatians, they settled in the ports
of New Orleans and San Francisco, where they established
the first joint Illyrian fraternal organizations. The second
and biggest wave of immigrants came mainly from Serb
lands controlled at that time by Austria-Hungary and Turkey;
Lika,
Bania,
Kordun,
Bosnia, Herzegovina,
Slavonia,
Voy-
vodina, Kosovo and Metohia, as well as from Montenegro.
The change of United States policy reduced Serb immigra¬
tion in the twenties and thirties to a trickle. The third wave
of immigration was not considered in this study as it covers
415
the period up to World War II, concentrating on the earliest
phase of the history of Serb publications in America,
Periodical publications included newspapers (dailies
and weeklies), magazines and yearly publications (almanacs
and calendars). The first Serbian newspapers appeared in the
last decade of the nineteenth century, marking the beginning
of a long and very interesting tradition of public communica¬
tion.
Serbian immigrant periodical publications in America
are a significant source for several projects. Firstly, they pro¬
vide information for the reconstruction of the history of Serb
immigrants in America and the research of a number of is¬
sues regarding immigration, Americanization, social adapta¬
tion, etc. Secondly, periodical publications generated a new
product: the Serb immigrant public opinion in America, that
would play a significant role in the way key immigrant issues
were viewed. Thirdly, periodical publications were in some
cases both a product of and a factor of influence on Serb
immigrant organizations, especially fraternal societies and fe¬
derations, on the local, regional and national level. Fourthly,
periodical publications provide a key insight into the way
of life of immigrants, their social and psychological needs,
changes involved in adaptation, the central role of culture
in ethnic identity, the forging of a new Serbian-American
identity. Last but not least, these publications provide infor¬
mation on the relationship involving the protagonists of this
process: the land of emigration, the land of immigration and
the people who were at the same time emigrants and immi¬
grants. Another factor involved in this process is the image
of the Motherland, that played an important role in the first
two turbulent decades of the twentieth century.
The first chapter of this study is an Introduction provi¬
ding a survey of authors, books and articles dealing with the
416
various topics centered around the theme of Serbs in Ameri¬
ca and their periodical publications.
The second chapter deals with the earliest reports on
America and Serbs in the United States. It provides an in¬
sight into the biographies of the earliest immigrants and the
motives for emigration, the descriptions of the passage to
America and their view of the New World. This chapter also
includes early memoirs describing experiences that contri¬
buted to the forging of a specific immigrant identity.
The third chapter is dedicated to the Serb community
in San Francisco, and especially to the activities of the first
Serbian organization in the United States: the Serbian-Mon¬
tenegrin Literary and Benevolent Society
(Срйско-црноїор-
CKO
литерарно и
добротворно друшшво)
founded in
1

.
This cultural and fraternal organization was instrumental in
the launching of the weekly newspaper liberty
(Sloboda),
published
1893-1906.
The Serb community of San Francisco
held a leading position until
1906,
when the earthquake and
fire devastated the city. This was also the time when Ameri¬
can industrial centers absorbed a huge wave of new immi¬
grants, taking over a leadership role in the next period of
immigrant history.
The fourth chapter is dedicated to the Serb community
in Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania. Serb immigrants that set¬
tled in Pennsylvania came mainly from
Lika,
Bania,
Kordun
and
Montenegro. In 1901
they founded the Serbian Ortho¬
dox Federation Srbobran
(Срйски
православни савез
Cp-
бобран)
Several Serbian newspapers were published in this
state, but the American Srbobran
(Американски Србобран)
established in
1906,
has become the Serbian Diaspora news¬
paper with the longest publication tradition and an extremely
valuable source for the research of the twentieth century his¬
tory of Serb immigrants in America.
417
The fifth chapter is about the Serb immigrant commu¬
nity in Chicago. The concentration of new immigrants in
Chicago and its environs (South Chicago, Gary, etc.) fos¬
tered the founding of cultural and fraternal societies and
federations. One individual was especially instrumental in
the development of Serbian-American publishing. This was
John Palandech (Ivan
Palandačić),
whose company pub¬
lished newspapers, almanacs, calendars and books designed
to satisfy the needs of the growing Serbian-American im¬
migrant community. Chicago also became the center of the
Serbian Orthodox Church in the United States and Canada,
especially following the establishment of the Diocese and
the Monastery of St.
Sava
in Libertyville.
The sixth chapter deals with New York, home of a small,
but old and important Serb immigrant community. Part of its
importance was due to the fact that three outstanding Serb
immigrants lived there: Nikola
Tesla, Mihailo
Pupin and
Petar Radosavljević.
Pupin became active and influential in
the Serbian-American community after becoming president
of the fraternal organization Concord (Sloga,1909) and ho¬
norary consul of the Kingdom of Serbia
(1911).
Serbian peri¬
odical publications edited and printed in New York achieved
their heyday during the turbulent years of the Balkan Wars
and World War I, a key period in two respects: regarding the
relationship between the Old Country and the Diaspora, as
well as regarding the development of diplomatic ties between
the United States and the Kingdom of Serbia (later Kingdom
of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, renamed Yugoslavia).
The seventh chapter is dedicated to several smaller Ser¬
bian-American communities: New Orleans, St. Louis and
Detroit.
The last chapter consists of several segments, dealing
with the following subchapters; Early
publications,
Religious
418
publications, Socialist publications, and Calendars. Infor¬
mation is given on the earliest dailies and weeklies, most
of which have never been researched. The various weeklies
and monthlies published by the Serbian Orthodox Church
in America, before and after the founding of the Diocese,
witness the development of church-school congregations,
the building and consecration of churches, highlighting the
role of religion in the
Serbi
an-American identity. Socialist
publications appeared in the early twentieth century and be¬
came especially numerous and influential in the twenties and
thirties. Their leftist political orientation opened a number of
controversies regarding the role of immigrants in their New
Country, as well as their interpretation of the Old Country.
The last segment deals with yearly publications, calendars
and almanacs, that became very popular among immigrant
readers in the twenties and thirties. They are also a valuable
source for the research of Serbian-American cultural his¬
tory.

importance was due to the fact that three outstanding Serb
immigrants lived there: Nikola
They are also a valuable
source for the research of Serbian-American cultural his¬
tory.
