Gunn continues to explore

readership, and draws comparison with
sermons, especially those preached to
béguines
(women who were not members of a religious
order but devoted themselves to prayer and
good works). The author also challenges some
of the established critiques on the specifically
female readership, arguing for the place of
Ancrene
Wisse in
the development of the
literature of vernacular spirituality.
This book is an excellent introduction to

Wisse
and challenges some of the
well-established views of the text and its
anchoritic audience.
