Religion, Terror and
Violence
In
light of the continued shadow cast by
9/11
and the subsequent war on terror,
Religion, Terror and Violence brings together a group of distinguished scholars to
scrutinize the intimate link between religion and violence. A key theme in this col¬
lection is that both the violence and the reactions to those events were intimately
linked to cultural and social authorizing processes that could be called religious.
In twenty fascinating contributions, such themes as national identity forma¬
tion, ritualization of traumatic events, artistic representations, and cultural power
contestations are scrutinized, along with reflections on the role of the public intel¬
lectual in such situations.
Working from diverse backgrounds and with a range of analytical tools within
the field of religious studies, contributors bring together, in surprising ways, the
personal and the critical, thereby revealing both the applicability of scholarly
tools for understanding religious violence and the engaged role of the scholar in
the face of such events. Many of the contributions emerge from the
angst
cre¬
ated within the classroom setting, while others reflect on the academic profes¬
sion while under
9/1
l s shadow, while still others demonstrate the ideological and
social implications of such perspectives. Theoretical and methodological diversity
shapes this collection, challenging and inviting readers to recognize the neces¬
sity for public discourse on issues of religion and violence to engage scholarly
approaches to the role of religious phenomena.
Religion, Terror and Violence provides a nuanced but incisive insight into the
reaction of the discipline of religious studies to the post-9/1
1
world.
