Zusammenfassung: | "The seer (mantis), an expert in the art of divination, operated in ancient Greek society through a combination of charismatic inspiration and diverse skills ranging from examining the livers of sacrificed animals to spirit possession. Unlike the palm readers and mediums who exist on the fringe of modern society, many seers were highly paid, well respected, educated members of the elite who played an essential role in the conduct of daily life, political decisions, and military campaigns. Armies, for example, never went anywhere without one. This engaging book, the only comprehensive study of this fascinating figure, enters into the socioreligious world of ancient Greece to explore what seers did, why they were so widely employed, and how their craft served as a viable and useful social practice." -- Publisher's description. |

HER {mantis), an expert in the art of
divination, operated in ancient Greek society
through a combination of* charismatic inspiration
and diverse skills ranging
írom
examining the
livers of sacrificed animals to spirit possession.
Unlike the palm readers and mediums who exist
on the fringe of modern society, ancient seers
were often highly paid, well-respected, educated
members ot the elite who played an essential role
in the conduct of daily life, political decisions,
and military campaigns. Armies, for example,
never went anywhere without one. This engaging
book, the only comprehensive study of this fas¬
cinating figure, enters into the socio-religious
world of ancient Greece to explore what seers
did, why they were so widely used, and how
their craft served as a viable and useful social
practice. Drawing from literary and artistic evi¬
dence, Michael Flower discusses the techniques
of the seers art, the dynamics of the divinatory
consultation, and the system of belief within
which they operated. He introduces female seers
who practiced types of divination usually asso¬
ciated with highly paid elite males and places the
Greek seer in an illuminating cross-cultural con¬
text. Combining classical scholarship with recent
work in anthropology and Near Eastern studies,
his innovative, accessible study presents an illu¬
minating new picture of this central player in
ancient Greek society.
