with the discussion about the state of
Wiślanie
(Vistulans),
a baptistery, a Roman floor with
figurai
engravings, a
tale about
Wisław
the Beautiful, Walter the Successful and Helgunda, the
collegiate church founded by King
Casimir
the Great, and the curate house
founded by
Jan Długosz.
More competent readers know that
Wiślica
used to
be one of the oldest municipal centres in Poland; it was for a time the capital
of a separate principality, one of main towns in
Małopolska
[Little Poland].
What was written above is a sufficient reason to present its history.
The presented studies cover the basic problems from the history of
Wi¬
ślica
from its origins to the mid- 17th century. They show its role in the
formation of the
Piast
state, the origin and development of the castle and
town centre, the functioning of the town during the
Piast
and Jagiellonian
rule. Each chapter brings a spacious material concerning the building deve¬
lopment of the town, the organisation of town authorities, the number of its
inhabitants, the collegiate school, care over the poor and the forms of reli¬
gious life. Also relationships of
Wiślica
with the church administration in
the Cracow diocese and the position of the town among other towns of
Ma¬
łopolska
are outlined. The whole book is enriched by numerous source ap¬
pendices closely connected with the presented problems.
The territorial range of the study included not only the area of the later
town, but also its nearest environs, which consisted of the suburbs, the
traffic and
hydrographie
networks, as well as bridges. Chronologically, the
considerations embrace the period from the 10th century to the mid 17th
century, thanks to which it was possible to see the subsequent phases of
urbanisation, increase in political significance during the
Piast
era and the
economic prosperity during the last Jagiellons. The investigative perspective
obtained in this way permitted taking into account many historic sources
including numerous documents of church provenance as well as archaeolo¬
gical and architectural findings.
Summing up, it is to be hoped that the published material will enable the
reader to obtain a better knowledge about small, and in the case of Poland
medium-size towns, in the economy and culture of this part of Europe.
