amines the ways that continuous immigration from Mexico transformed

the political, social, and cultural life of the
American Southwest. Taking a fresh approach to one of the most divisive
political issues of our time, David
Gutiérrez
explores the ways that the con¬
stant influx of Mexican immigrants influenced Mexican Americans sense of
social and cultural identity and thus shaped their politics and the trajectory
of the Mexican American civil rights movement.
Gutiérrez
draws on an extensive body of primary and secondary sources
to challenge some of the most cherished myths about U.S. immigration and
labor policies, the adaptation and incorporation of immigrants into society,
and the nature of the ethnic Mexican experience in the Southwest.
Rejecting the stark bifurcation between citizen and alien implied by
the paradigm of assimilation, he argues that the regional, demographic,
class, and cultural heterogeneity of the ethnic Mexican population guaran¬
teed that this diverse group would develop and express a broad range of
political views on the intricately linked issues of immigration, ethnic iden¬
tity, and citizenship.
