The study of tourism and indeed the tourism industry is changing constantly. A
.
л
contemporary understanding of tourism requires the use of contemporary
approaches and a multi-disciplinary frame of reference. Contemporary Tourism:
an international approach presents a new and refreshing approach to the study of
tourism, by utilizing an approach to managing, marketing and developing tourism that goes
well beyond the popular conception of tourism as holiday travel. Instead, it takes a product-
orientated approach to illustrate how products and the temporary experiences of tourists
should be understood from the perspective of tourism firms and organizations.
By considering issues such as the experience economy, the changing world order,
destination marketing, tourism ethics, pro-poor tourism risk and climate change,
Contemporary Tourism: an international approach highlights the ongoing threats from
terrorism, health scares faced by the tourism industry, and related security and risk
management strategies. It also takes a unique perspective of tourism within the services
context, studying the unavoidable overlap between the tourism and hospitality industries and
their interaction.
The book is divided into five sections to reflect a contemporary approach to understanding
the tourism system:
Contemporary Tourism Systems
The Contemporary Tourist
The Contemporary Tourism Destination
The Contemporary Tourism Industry
Tourism Futures
Each chapter has a thorough learning structure including chapter objectives, examples,
discussion points, self-review questions, checklists and case studies. Cases are both
thematic and destination-based and always international, and are used to emphasize the
relationship between general principles and the practice of tourism looking at areas such as
business and special interest tourism and the role of technology. Accompanying the text is
an authoritative and thorough set of online resources to guide the reader through the topic
area including material for both students and lecturers.
