^-CENTURY CZECH-AMERICAN
PERIODICALS
(Summary)
Czech immigrant press originated in the United States at
the very beginning of the 1860s, i.e. roughly ten years after the
onset of mass migration from the Czech lands to America.
The functions of immigrant journalism in the target coun¬
try were extremely diverse; the Czech periodicals were pub¬
lished by the spiritual elite among the immigrants, providing
information, education and essential orientation in the ethni¬
cally different environment, as well as manifesting and streng¬
thening their original national identity. In addition, the peri¬
odicals constituted a forum for active public communication,
exceeding the immediate context of the immigrants. However,
the principal function of the of the immigrant periodicals was
to integrate and identify the immigrants ethnically. The im¬
portance of the Czech press to Czech immigrants in the USA
in the second half of the 19th century is clearly signalled by the
enormous number of periodicals started and issued despite
economic and technological difficulties.
Czech immigrant journalism in the United States was not
only a platform for the essential self-awareness of the immi¬
grants, but also a representative and reliable record of their
gradual assimilation, continuously reflecting the complicated
process of national, social and language integration into the
target country, so vastly different from their original home in
terms of social, political, ideological, economic, cultural and
language parameters.

l^-CENTURY CZECH-AMERICAN PERIODICALS
Owing to its role as an authentic document of the history
of Czech immigrants in the United States, Czech immigrant
journalism attracted the attention of a number of scientific
disciplines. Accordingly, the present study of the
19љ-сепШгу
Czech-American press employs an interdisciplinary appro¬
ach, although the original interest was largely linguistic. The
study focused on the Czech language and its development in
the multilingual environment of America, manifested in the
official written form in Czech-American periodicals. Deepe¬
ning insight into the problem revealed that a narrow linguis¬
tic, stratificational and comparative analysis of the texts was
insufficient, and that in order to capture the immigrants ideo¬
logical development and their gradual assimilation in the new
country a broadly conceived interdisciplinary communicati¬
ve approach had to be employed, including aspects of histo¬
ry, ethnography, sociology, psychology and journalism. This
broad basis was used to analyse the thematic and semantic
aspects of the texts and to interpret them in sociolinguistic,
social-psychological and linguo-political terms.
Chapter I of the publication
Cechoamerickâ
periodika
19.
století
(içiï-Century
Czech-American Periodicals) deals with
the delimitation of the terms migration, emigration, exile, and
with the survey of Czech scientific literature devoted to the
topic.
Chapter II is devoted to the causes, types and chronology of
Czech immigration in America and includes a bibliographical
survey of relevant Czech, and partly also foreign, sources.
Chapter III explores social, ideological, cultural, and com¬
municative aspects of Czech immigrant life in the USA in the
19th century, while Chapter IV surveys the general functions of
Czech immigrant press in America and describes the metho¬
dology of research employed in the monograph.
Chapters V, VI and
VII
introduce the principal Czech-Ame¬
rican periodicals, newspapers and magazines published in the
separate decades of the second half of the 19th century, and
describe the developing functions of Czech immigrant journa-

stolen (Czech immigrants
self-perception in the texts of I9th-century CzechrAmerican
periodicals) presents conclusions gained by the communica¬
tive interdisciplinary study of journalistic texts. These include
the development of the awareness of Czech immigrants in the
USA, and the forms of their self-perception with a view to the¬
ir national identity, their original home country and the new
environment, and to the Czech language.
The final chapter, IX, gives a bibliographical list of Czech-
-American periodicals started in the 19th century.
The principal goal of the present monograph is to recon¬
struct the journalistic, linguistic and partly also ideological
development, manifested as a process of gradual identificati¬
on of the Czech immigrants with the American environment in
the course of the second half of the 19th century. This is a huge
task, clearly exceeding the possibilities of a single publication.
A period as extensive as this could not possibly be described in
detail, either in terms of the completeness of the overview of
19ш-сепгшу
Czech immigrant press in the USA and its history,
with a view to language change, or in the treatment of the pro¬
cess of integration of the immigrants in the multi-ethnic and
linguistically different context. It is, however, equally clear
that all these aspects are interrelated and had to be treated
as such. Consequently, the monograph represents an intro¬
duction to the topic rather than a conclusive work, with the
separate areas deserving further study.
Czech-American newspapers and magazines record the
ethnic, social, political and often also personal development
of the Czech immigrant community and separate individuals
in America. A broadly conceived reconstruction of the global
communication relations, based on interdisciplinary research,
might in future result in more detailed knowledge of the ove¬
rall historical development of Czech immigration in the Uni¬
ted States in the 19th, and consequently, in the 20th century.
