Throughout its history, British television has found a place, if only on the margins, for
programmes that consciously worked to expand the boundaries of television
aesthetics. Even in the present climate of increased academic interest in television
history, its experimental tradition has generally either been approached generically
or been lost within the assumption that television is simply a mass medium.
Experimenta!
British television uncovers the history of experimental television,
bringing back forgotten programmes as well as looking at more familiar ones from
a fresh perspective. Through concentrating on the ways in which particular
programmes broke with convention, the book contributes to a strand of television
studies that analyses its aesthetics, moving away from a concern with the everyday .
The main body of the book consists of case studies of particular programmes,
the creative talent behind them, as well as the question of experimentation with
established genres. The chapters are organised in chronological order and written by
both established and up-and-coming scholars. The case studies draw attention to the
lack of a consistent specificity in the television medium, as well as the varying
approaches to experimental aesthetics. Locating the case studies within historical
contexts, the book addresses the impact of political issues, institutional conventions
and the importance of the changing technologies upon British television. Covering
experiments within generic programming, as well as more avant-gardist television
productions, the book suggests that its particular perspective can make an original
and unexpected contribution to broader aesthetic debates about the medium.
