This study seeks to present a comprehensive analysis of qualitative and quantita¬
tive aspects of warfare in the Early Bronze Age society
(2300/2200
B.C. until
1500
B.C.) in the
Weinviertel
region of northeastern Austria. During this time period,
bronze was first widely used for jewelry, weapons, tools, and special-purpose
money. The production and distribution of the raw materials for bronze and of
finished copper and bronze products are tied to substantial changes in the social,
political, economic, and ideological spheres; a process that began at the latest
during the Eneolithic. Many aspects of these transformations are reflected in the
warfare patterns. While the archaeological evidence remains somewhat inconclusive,
as is typical for societies of low social complexity, one must not conclude that
warfare was unknown. This exploratory study extends and qualifies current ideas
on warfare using the material record of the Early Bronze Age of the
Weinviertel.
The model of warfare developed in detail in the respective chapters, runs as
follows: Warfare was conducted on a small-scale, infrequently, with non-specialized
weapons, contained ritual aspects, could have been motivated by a variety
of reasons derived from the social or physical landscape, was carried out predo¬
minantly by males, organized at the household, village, and/or polity level, and
eventually resulted in specialized weapons, an increase in social complexity during
the Middle Bronze Age, and extensive defensive systems in the Late Bronze Age.
Inspiration for the ideas contained in this model comes from the archaeological
evidence, ethnology, general human behavior, European and North American
scholarship on warfare, and literature discussing functionalism, systems theory,
and post-processualism. Selective use of ethnographic information informs and
illustrates many points.
