Introduction
Immediately after the war, the Central Jewish Historical Commission (CJHC), which
was created in the autumn of
1944
in Lublin, started collecting memoirs of Holocaust sur¬
vivors. The Jewish Historical Institute (JHI), which received the memoirs and testimonies
collected by the Central Jewish Historical Commission, has continued the Commission s
work since the moment of its establishment in
1947.
This work has not been finished yet, as
memoirs are still being sent to the
ЈШ
archives, and they are added to the existing collection
of memoirs.
The collection of memoirs (Record Group
302)
and that of testimonies concerning the
war (Record Group
301),
were created at the same time. The formal difference between the
documents in RG
301,
classified as testimonies, and the documents in RG
302,
classified as
memoirs, is that the former were recorded by employees of the CJHC on the basis of the sur¬
vivors accounts, while the latter were written by the survivors themselves. There are never¬
theless instances of testimonies in the RG
301
written personally by the survivors, and of
memoirs in the RG
302
that were dictated by the survivors to the CJHC s employees. A more
distinct criterion of the classification is therefore the size of particular texts, though there are
exceptions in this respect too, and some of the testimonies are lengthy, while several of the
memoirs will be only a few pages long.
Among these memoirs there are fictionalised texts, texts following the classic memoir
convention, as well as texts which are stylised as historical descriptions. Some of them have
been published; most are still in manuscript. Finally, this Record Group includes documents
which, though undoubtedly valuable, may seem accidental, like a class chronicle from a pri¬
mary school in
Kraków,
or an appeal of former Auschwitz prisoners to the international pub¬
lic opinion.
The main subject of our collection of memoirs is the occupation, the extermination, and
the straggle to survive. Sporadically, there are memoirs which describe earlier years of their
authors lives: the interwar period, even the years of the First World War.
Some of me memoirs from the Jewish Historical Institute s collection were written at
the time which they describe
-
in ghettos and in hiding, like, for example, the diary of
Dawid
Sierakowiak from the
Łódź
ghetto, those of Calek Perechodnik or Baruch Milch, and many
others. It often happened that the author did not manage to survive the war and that his or her
work was submitted to the JHI by someone else. But it also happened that someone s lost
memoirs were given or sent to the JHI, and only later their author was found as well (which,
for example, was the case with
Renia
Knoll from
Kraków).
After the war, a considerable number of those who managed to survive wanted to speak
about their fate. The Central Jewish Historical Commission encouraged them to do so, and,
consequently, some of the memoirs in the collection were submitted to a competition
announced by the Commission. Other authors wrote down their memories many years after
the war. Characteristically, over recent years, the subjects of the memoirs sent to the Institute
have changed. Apart from accounts of the fate of Jews during the German occupation, there
appeared
-
more numerously than in earlier years
-
reminiscences of people evacuated or
exiled into the interior of the USSR.
INWENTARZ
The languages that dominate in the
JHľs
collection are Polish and Yiddish. However,
there are also memoirs written in German, Russian, Hebrew, and recently also in the English
language.
Some of the memoirs from the collection became widely known thanks to publication
in the book form. These include, for example, the diaries of D. Sierakowiak, the reminis¬
cences of
С
Perechodnik and B. Milch, or the notes of Chaim
Aron
Kaplan. Many memoirs
or their fragments were published in
Biuletyn ŻIH
[The JHI Bulletin] and in
Kwartalnik
Historii Żydów
[Jewish History Quarterly]. Additionally, there are two published anthologies
of extracts from memoirs included in RG
302
edited by
Michał
Grynberg.
The first antholo¬
gy concerns Warsaw
(Pamiętniki z getta warszawskiego
[Memoirs from the Warsaw Ghetto],
Warsaw,
1993).
The second
{Życie i zagłada Żydów polskich
1939-1945.
Relacje świadków
[The Life and Extermination of Polish Jews
1939-1945.
Survivors Testimonies], edited by
M.
Grynberg
and Maria Kotowska, Warsaw,
2003),
includes both fragments of memoirs as
well as testimonies from RG
301,
and is devoted to the fate of Jews in other Polish localities.
The first
ЈШ
memoirs collection catalogue was published in
1994.
Since then, howev¬
er, the collection of memoirs has expanded. The new catalogue provides more information
about both the content of the memoirs and their authors. What helped provide this informa¬
tion were documents attached to the memoirs, data given in registers and catalogues, as well
as documents collected in other Record Groups of the JHI archive.
While preparing this catalogue, our objective was to present as complete as possible a
bibliography of the
ЈШ
memoirs, or their fragments, that have been published. Their authors,
having gone to various parts of the world, published their memoirs in a number of languages.
While collecting information about the authors, we managed to establish the authorship of
several memoirs which had been previously treated as anonymous. Invaluable while prepar¬
ing the catalogue was the help we received from
Anja
Fritz,
Monika
Polit,
Yale
Reisner,
Martyna
Rusiniak and prof.
Feliks Tych,
and we would like to express our gratitude to them.
* * *
A description of each of the memoirs begins with the author s name and surname (if
possible, also his or her date, place of birth, and parents names are given). This is followed
by the specification of the years that particular memoirs concern, as well as the time and place
where they were written (this information is given in square brackets if the text is not dated,
but our acquaintance with the author s fate lets us specify where and when it was created).
After that comes a list of the localities referred to in the memoirs. The central place is given
to short notes about the contents of the memoirs. They are followed by information about the
author, and then by the archival description of the document, and the bibliography of its exist¬
ing publications.
