the Polish People s Republic
Summary
The tide of the book draws on Peter Burger s paper entitled Theory of
Avant-garde. The author describes avant-garde art as going beyond the
category of the autonomy of art or art for art s sake. He shows that
avant-garde works of art, based on the principle of installation, combina¬
tion of heterogeneous elements, contradicts the illusory and organic
nature of the traditional work of art.
Such concepts as inorganic work, institution of art, or social
commitment of the artist are adequate for the description of the situa¬
tion in Polish art and history of particular institutions: independent
galleries
(Foksal, Pod Moną Lizą, Permafo,
Repassage,
Biuro Poezji
and
others). In these small and unofficial spaces new art was displayed, the
kind of
att
parallel to the new trends in art in Western Europe and the
USA: environment, happening, and conceptual art. In Poland, however,
these artistic phenomena have received particular importance, since they
were presented in elitist galleries that gathered artistic
micromilieus.
In
the two decades, the
1960s
and the
1970s,
the circumstances had become
very interesting and complex. On the one hand, following the period of
socialist realism of the
1950s,
there was a reception of innovative artistic
movements, but on the other hand the socio-political significance of
those tendencies were corrected by the socio-political frame-work of the
Polish People s Republic. After the ideologically oriented social realism,
groups of artists and critics who established galleries defended the inde¬
pendence and freedom of artistic experiment in the form of the work of
art; rather than projected
utopias
of a social revolution through art
(which was a characteristic motive of the neoavant-garde in the West of
the
1960s).
Thus avant-garde became de-politicised, but as a specific
response to the ideological context of public life in the then Poland.
The author traces the transformations of the model of the inde¬
pendent gallery
Ín
the two decades under consideration. The
transforma-

dons of artistic institutions were combines with the decentralisation of
artistic life, changes of the language of artistic expression
ín
various cen¬
tres. Now there was a constant exchange of ideas and conceptions be¬
tween these centres on the map of Polish art. This phenomenon was
described in the
1970s
as an artistic network. The institutional model
seemed adequate for the presentation of the art of conceptual character.
We find here, however, the basic paradox: the individual, arbitrary and
artistic gesture, exposed in the private and informal context of a gallery,
aspired to contain universal meanings and participate in the global net¬
work of art; the concrete situation seemed to be transformed into
a common experience. In the
1970s
the author notices two ways by
means of which to describe galleries: an
autonomìe
place and a non-
diversified no place, network. At the same time he shows the history
of galleries through a reconstruction of small and individualised artistic
circles.
One of the main threads of the book shows the artistic strategy of
critical distance. Some strategies of exhibitions or publications unveil
the artists activity in public space. It goes without saying that this is one
of the main accomplishments of the independent galleries, i.e. they
unveiled the limits of artistic space and a constant interaction between
the artistic idea, expression and the public, social context. It is worth
stressing that this reflection was supposed to protect artistic independ¬
ence as it is contained in the form of a work of art. This was one of the
basic difference in relation to the decade that followed
—
the period of
Solidarity.
