Zusammenfassung: | This book is based on the argument that detailed and developmental formative feedback is the single most useful thing teachers can do for students. It helps to clarify the expectations of higher education and assist all students to achieve their potential. This book promotes student learning through formative assessment and feedback, which: enables self-assessment and reflection in learning, encourages teacher-student dialogue, helps clarify what is good performance, provides students with quality information to help improve their learning, encourages motivation and self-confidence in students, and aids the teacher in shaping teaching. Underpinned by the relevant theory, the practical advice and examples in this book directly address the issues of how to motivate students to engage in formative assessment effectively and shows teachers how they can provide further useful formative feedback. |

Providing feedback to students is an important aspect of the teacher s role in
higher education. It enables students to learn from assessment and can have a
significant impact on the motivation of a learner, both intrinsic (wanting to
learn) and extrinsic (needing to learn). This book suggests that the quality and
timeliness of feedback are key features in the student learning process and in
the teacher/student relationship.
By encouraging teachers to think about what it is they are trying to achieve
in providing formative assessment and feedback, and how these provide an
enhanced learning environment for students, Enhancing Learning through
Formative Assessment and Feedback aims to improve student learning oppor¬
tunities in higher education. Topics discussed include:
■
principles of formative assessment and feedback
■
the student learning environment
■
formative assessment and feedback techniques
■
making use of ICTs in formative assessment and feedback
■
benefits of formative feedback for academic staff.
Enhancing Learning through Formative Assessment and Feedback applies
relevant theories and principles through teaching scenarios and case studies to
create a pragmatic framework and set of tools that will
al
low teachers to engage
with students through formative activities. It will appeal to new and experienced
teachers in higher and further education, as well as professional developers.
Alastair Irons is Associate Dean in the School of Computing, Engineering and
Information Sciences at Northumbria University.
