ZARUFINETS CULTURE AND
EUROPEAN LATENIZED
CULTURES
Summary
It is well known that Slavic tribes have been settling
in Pripyat
Polesie,
Middle and Upper Podneprovie
areas since the first half of the 1st century
A.D.
This
explains great scientific and wide public interest in
the history of the beginning of the New Era when the
tribes of the Zarubinets Archeological Culture
occupied this territory.
After the decline of Scythian Empire and so called
historical expansion of Celts in Central and South
Eastern Europe new social and political communities
were established that was reflected in the overall
picture of European archeological cultures.
The Zarubinets Culture was a part of barbaric
latenized cultures that extended from lower Rhine
river over Poland and reached Dnieper river, and from
the South of Northland over Carpathian-Dniester
Region to the lower Danube river. These cultures had
several common features that made them distinct from
other European cultural societies.
Khvoika V.V. who was the pioneer explorer of
Zarubinets Culture monuments considered Zarubinets
people as autochthonic, descendants of local forest
and steppe population that lived there since the
Tripolie Archeological Culture and to be ethnically
Slavic.
Modern archeologists do not adhere to.·this
autochthonic theory of Zarubinets Culture s origin.
Moreover, the renewed migration concept of Za¬
rubinets Culture s origin and its place in the system
of latenized cultures was born. According to the
migration concept, Zarubinets Culture in Podneprovie
region is considered to be an entirely foreign
phenomenon because it resulted from the transfer of
completely developed Yastorf Culture to this area
[Schukin
1994;
Eremenko
1997].
It seems that this
theory does not fit completely historical reality either.
For several years, my research ,was focused on
formation of the Zarubinets Culture, its connections
with latenized cultures and its relations with its
predecessors in Podneprovie region
[1992,
p.
265-
288; 1995,
p.
33-47; 1999,
p.
6-25;
1999a, p.
24-41;

In this work
I summarize the results of my studies on the Zarubinets
Culture. I am looking into the issues of its formation,
ways and sources of its latenization, identification of
its specific features and determination of its
pláče
among latenized cultures in Central and SouthEastern
Europe.
To meet this end, a lot of efforts were made to
process and typologize mass categories of archeo¬
logical sources. In this respect, pottery, funeral ritual
and fibulas were most important. Findings from large
burial grounds were the main sources for the purposes
of this research. In the Zarubinets Culture, these are
mostly completely explored burial grounds near
Velemichi, Voronino and Otverzhichi villages in
Pripyat
Polesie
region; near Chaplin village in Upper
Podneprovie region; in Pirogov and Korchevatoe
suburbs of Kiev, near Vishenki village on the left bank
of Dnieper river in Mid-Podneprovie region. In
addition, materials from Devich
Gora,
Semuradtsy,
Mogilyany, Rakhny burial grounds and from ancient
colonies and settlements of Lyutezh, Pilipenkova
Gora, Obolon,
Chaplin, Pochep, Sinkovo etc. were
also used.
Data on
1,572
clay pots,
483
fibulas and more than
1,000
graves in burial grounds and settlements of the
Zarubinets Culture were studied in this work.
Most of materials of latenized cultures I studied in
museums and archeological institutions in Romania,
Poland and Germany.
The materials from burial grounds and settlements
of the Poenesht-Lukashevka Culture (Poeneshti,
Lukashevka, Boroseshti) were used in my study. These
materials include about
300
graves,
333
clay pots and
almost
190
fibulas.
Materials of the Yastorf Culture include ceramics
from Lyuboshitse, Grefenheinihen, Vousterhousen and
other burial grounds
- 338
objects in total, as well as
fibulas and information on burial rituals were also
studied.
Archeological materials of the Pshevorsk Culture
were found in Wars aw-
Vily
anuv, Zadovitse, Ka-
menchik and Karchevets burial grounds. The ceramics
collection of the Pshevorsk Culture includes randomly
selected
370
pots from graves with fibulas of mid-
and
late Laten
model.
The Oksyv Culture is represented by materials from
Prusch-10 burial ground in Polish Pomorie region near
Gdansk city.
Materials about the Pomorie Culture were selected
from-publications on Igzhichna,
Terezin,
Marinets,
Pasikone, Mikhalkovo
burial grounds and other
places. Pottery selection of the Pomorie Culture
includes^Ol pieces.
All mass materials (pottery, fibulas, funeral rituals)
were processed using simple statistical methods. The
database on every category of archeological material
was developed. It includes numerical codes of
measured parameters and descriptive (morphological)
features of every artifact.
PARADOX system data processing program was
С П.
Пачкова
developed for IBM-computerized classification,
typologizing and comparison of ceramic items. The
comparison of individual groups, types and selections
of pottery was conducted using the percentage of and
the distribution tendency for pots of every individual
group in materials from the monument or culture.
Fibulas were studied using the typologies developed
by Kostzhevskiy Y. and
Ambroza A.K.,
but with more
organized features ranking.
For the periodization of the Zarubinets Culture, the
correlation method was applied to the materials from
burial grounds. According to this method, fibulas (as
the main chorological rapper) were correlated with
specific isolated features of clay pots.
The origin of the Zarubinets Culture funeral ritual
was studied by breaking down funeral rituals to
separate features and by comparing funeral rituals of
all latenized cultures. Recurrence rate of Zarubinets
Culture s features in other cultures was calculated.
High/low distribution tendency of every selected
feature pointed out to their potential origin.
Based on results of this study we can draw the
following conclusions:
1.
The Zarubinets Culture consolidated the ter¬
ritories that in the previous Scythian period were
occupied by several different in ethnical and cultural
respect tribes. Elements of preceding cultures can be
identified in Zarubinets Culture s archeological
materials, but they are not numerous because of the
change of life standards and values. The Zarubinets
Culture was not a direct successor of any preceding
culture.
2.
Comparative study of major categories of
archeological materials from different territories
revealed significant regional differences
-
in the type
of residential habitat house, women jewellery,
elements of funeral ritual and clay ceramics complex.
The closest relations were maintained between Mid-
Dnieper and
Polesie
regions. Upper Dnieper region
seems more isolated. All These three regions were
mostly connected by so called fibula of Zarubinets
type which is a special kind of fibula-with triangular
ending of stem.
3.
The Zarubinets Culture belonged to the group of
latenized cultures each of which has strikingly
distinctive character. Formation of latenized cultures
occurred according to general historical development
patterns. As a result, all latenized cultures were more
or less connected to each other. The connection of
the Zarubinets Culture to each individual latenized
culture is very specific.
4.
Comparison of artifacts from Zarubinets burial
grounds and Oksy
v
burial ground Prusch-lO on the
Baltic Sea coast suggested that there were no close
connections between populations of these cultures,
especially at the early stages. Revealed common
365
features are not sufficient for proclaiming significant
contribution of Oksyvsky Culture to the initial
development of the Zarubinets Culture. Moreover,
there is no reason to declare the resettlement
ornative
Oksyv people to Upper Podneprovie region.
5.
Pshevorsk Culture was located nearby Zarubinets
Culture territories. Common types of ceramics and
fibulas does not allow to make a conclusion on their
complete isolation, although their relations cannot be
described as intensive especially at the beginning of
their development. But still, the closest connections
are registered between the Pshevorsk Culture and
Zarubinets
Polesie,
less intense relations
-
with Upper
Podneprovie region.
6.
Comparative study of major categories of
archeological materials of Zarubinets and Poenesht-
Lukashevka Cultures allowed to identify distinctive
set of traditional domestic features representing
specific core of each culture.
7.
The contribution of Yastorf cultural groups to the
Poenesht-Lukashevka Culture was much bigger than
to the Zarubinets Culture. It can be observed in the
specific structure of their ceramic complexes, close
funeral rituals, almost similar fibula sets and belt
accessories.
8.
The Zarubinets Culture was situated off the main
road of
Bastaras
to the Balkans. As a result, less
number of Yastorf migrants came here that probably
was reflected in the material complex of the Zarubinets
Culture. Structure .of ceramic complex in Zarubinets
and Yastorf Cultures is very different. The funeral
ritual in the Zarubinets Culture is very specific and
adopted only few elements from the Yastorf one.
Zarubinets and Yastorf fibula complexes are also very
different, although certain fibula types are similar. All
the above makes difficult to combine Zarubinets and
Yastorf Cultures into one community as it was
suggested by Schukin M.B.
9.
All latenized cultures were strongly influenced
by Celts. Celtic veil of each of them had specific
features. Celts features penetrated to the Zarubinets
Culture by two major paths. The first is the north¬
west path which is associated with migrants from
Northern and Central Europe (primarily with
representatives of the Yastorf Culture and other people
that joined them during their migration). This path
and the newly acquired latenization style can be called
Yastorf or Bastarn path. The second is the south¬
west path which originated from
Laten
and Laten-
Illiriya Cultures in Carpathian-Dniestr-Danub region.
This style can be called South-Western or
Laten.
It was brought into the Zarubinets Culture by
Zarubinets people themselves from
Polesie
and
Podneprovie when they participated in Bastarnian
trips since the first Bastarnian invasion into Podunavie
at the end of the 3rd century B. A.

Culture's features in other cultures was calculated.
High/low distribution tendency of every selected
feature pointed out to their potential origin.
Based on results of this study we can draw the
following conclusions:
1.
The Zarubinets Culture consolidated the ter¬
ritories that in the previous Scythian period were
occupied by several different in ethnical and cultural
respect tribes. Elements of preceding cultures can be
identified in Zarubinets Culture's archeological
materials, but they are not numerous because of the
change of life standards and values. The Zarubinets
Culture was not a direct successor of any preceding
culture.
2.
Comparative study of major categories of
archeological materials from different territories
revealed significant regional differences
-
in the type
of residential habitat house, women jewellery,
elements of funeral ritual and clay ceramics complex.
The closest relations were maintained between Mid-
Dnieper and
Polesie
regions. Upper Dnieper region
seems more isolated. All These three regions were
mostly connected by so called "fibula of Zarubinets
type" which is a special kind of fibula-with triangular
ending of stem.
3.
The Zarubinets Culture belonged to the group of
latenized cultures each of which has strikingly
distinctive character. Formation of latenized cultures
occurred according to general historical development
patterns. As a result, all latenized cultures were more
or less connected to each other. The connection of
the Zarubinets Culture to each individual latenized
culture is very specific.
4.
Comparison of artifacts from Zarubinets burial
grounds and Oksy
v
burial ground "Prusch-lO" on the
Baltic Sea coast suggested that there were no close
connections between populations of these cultures,
especially at the early stages. Revealed common
365
features are not sufficient for proclaiming significant
contribution of Oksyvsky Culture to the initial
development of the Zarubinets Culture. Moreover,
there is no reason to declare the resettlement
ornative
Oksyv people to Upper Podneprovie region.
5.
Pshevorsk Culture was located nearby Zarubinets
Culture territories. Common types of ceramics and
fibulas does not allow to make a conclusion on their
complete isolation, although their relations cannot be
described as intensive especially at the beginning of
their development. But still, the closest connections
are registered between the Pshevorsk Culture and
Zarubinets
Polesie,
less intense relations
-
with Upper
Podneprovie region.
6.
Comparative study of major categories of
archeological materials of Zarubinets and Poenesht-
Lukashevka Cultures allowed to identify distinctive
set of traditional domestic features representing
specific core of each culture.
7.
The contribution of Yastorf cultural groups to the
Poenesht-Lukashevka Culture was much bigger than
to the Zarubinets Culture. It can be observed in the
specific structure of their ceramic complexes, close
funeral rituals, almost similar fibula sets and belt
accessories.
8.
The Zarubinets Culture was situated off the main
road of
Bastaras
to the Balkans. As a result, less
number of Yastorf migrants came here that probably
was reflected in the material complex of the Zarubinets
Culture. Structure .of ceramic complex in Zarubinets
and Yastorf Cultures is very different. The funeral
ritual in the Zarubinets Culture is very specific and
adopted only few elements from the Yastorf one.
Zarubinets and Yastorf fibula complexes are also very
different, although certain fibula types are similar. All
the above makes difficult to combine Zarubinets and
Yastorf Cultures into one community as it was
suggested by Schukin M.B.
9.
All latenized cultures were strongly influenced
by Celts. "Celtic veil" of each of them had specific
features. Celts features penetrated to the Zarubinets
Culture by two major paths. The first is the north¬
west path which is associated with migrants from
Northern and Central Europe (primarily with
representatives of the Yastorf Culture and other people
that joined them during their migration). This path
and the newly acquired latenization style can be called
"Yastorf or "Bastarn" path. The second is the south¬
west path which originated from
Laten
and Laten-
Illiriya Cultures in Carpathian-Dniestr-Danub region.
This style can be called "South-Western" or
"Laten."
It was brought into the Zarubinets Culture by
Zarubinets people themselves from
Polesie
and
Podneprovie when they participated in Bastarnian
trips since the first Bastarnian invasion into Podunavie
at the end of the 3rd century B. A.
