The shepherding of metropolitan loan Vancea of Buteasa in
Blaj
(11
April
1869-31
July
1892)
was a crucial period of time in the history of the
Romanian Greek-Catholic church. At the moment of his installation, Vancea
took over a young metropolitan province (less than two decades old) that was at
the beginning of its organization and lacked homogeneity of religious practices
and customs. Upon his death, twenty years later, he left behind a more thriving
and coherent religious life, based on the organization given by the provincial and
archdiocesan synods that the archbishop had managed to call together. Inside
the church Vancea launched a large-scale project of ecclesiastical administration
in a period of time when the Romanian Church United with Rome affirmed its
complex identity before the eyes of the Catholic world at I Vatican Ecumenical
Council. The evolution of the Greek-Catholic church was closely intertwined
with that of the national movement, since it was impossible for the Romanians
from Transylvania to separate the national component from the denominational
component.
This research presents the Romanian ecclesiastical historiography with
a personage, the archbishop loan Vancea of Buteasa, and a period of time little
dealt with, attempting to reconstitute them firstly in the light of new archive
sources. We proposed to introduce into the scientific circle sources, documents
as well as narratives, referring to the Greek-Catholic church in the second half
of 19th century, which we found in the Archives Funds in Romania. Thus,
the reader could find in this book circular letters addressed by metropolitan
Vancea to the clergy and the believers within the archdiocese, manuscripts of the
hierarch, documents of
memorialistic
character etc. A second category of archive
sources we used is represented by the metropolitans correspondence with the
Congregation of Propaganda Fide, the Department for Oriental Affairs, with
the Apostolic Nunciature in Vienna and the Holy See Secretariat of State in the

second
half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as well
as the correspondence the Apostolic Nunciature in Vienna and Secretariat of
State on issues concerning the Romanian Greek-Catholics and the churches in
Hungary. Ail these can be found in the Vatican Archives and among the most
valuable pieces we can mention here the
ad limino,
reports addressed to the prefect
of the Propaganda Fide by metropolitan Vancea and his suffragan bishops.
Thus, a first conclusion that can be drawn based on the information
offered by these briefly mentioned sources would be that in the years
1869-
1892
the Romanian Church United with Rome was shepherded by a complex
personality, a metropolitan that excelled in ecclesiastical administration, a discreet
intellectual, no less competent and profound, interested in theology, philosophy,
ecclesiastical history and canon law. His election as head of the church in
Blaj
was more than an action meant to fill a see vacancy. It was a process in which
the Greek-Catholic province of Alba Iulia and
Făgăraş
asserted its ecclesiastical
identity, a fact proved by the various options of ecclesiastical policy expressed by
the participants in the first election synod from
10-11
August
1868
and by the
large-scale debate around the right to elect the bishop in the Romanian Greek-
Catholic church in the 19th century.
Vancea s shepherding in
Blaj
was a period of reforms of the ecclesiastical
life. It was now that the constitutional, canonical and disciplinary organization of
the Romanian Church United with Rome started. These steps had been planned
in
1855
on the set-up of the metropolis by both the Romanians and the Holy
See and were discussed later on the occasion of the two visits of the apostolic
delegations to Transylvania in
1855
and
1858.
After
1869
the structure of the
archdiocese was reorganized, the result being a new administrative-territorial
organization through the reduction in number of the archpriestships from

to

in
1881
and by the set-up of a new
vicariate
forane,
that of the Szekelys, the
second of this sort after the
vicariate
of
Făgăraş.
The three archdiocesan synods
from
1869, 1882
and
1889
were moments of significance in the organization
of the metropolitan diocese, especially the second one from
1882
which marks
the coming into force of the decrees of the first provincial synod. We also
believe that, despite their obvious proximity, the structures of the archdiocese
can be distinguished from those of the metropolitan province and that Vancea s
prerogatives as archbishop can be separated from those he had as metropolitan,
as head of the entire ecclesiastical province of the Romanian Greek-Catholics.
Thus, we can state that the only institution truly valid for the entire metropolitan
province was the provincial synod, called twice in
1872
and
1882.
Both
provincial synods were also significant for the convergence of the pontifical and

the Romanian view on ecclesiastical organization and for the way in which the
Latinization policy that was being carried out at that time, deliberately or not,
influenced the constitutional organization of the Greek-Catholic church. Even
though regarded at that time and in several
historiographie
works later on as a
means of infringing the Oriental identity, the Latinization was the expression of
a coherent organization policy.
One of the most affected sectors by the state legislation in this period
of time was the denominational school. Along with the political pressure and
conditioning, it was influenced by the modernization process from its centre,
Blaj,
down to parishes. Despite the economic difficulties that the numerous Romanian
communities encountered, the impact of modernization can be detected from
improvements in infrastructure and educational programmes. Moreover, mixed
attendance of schools by Romanian children of both denominations was, for a
series of rural communities, the solution of minimal resistance, in spite of the
barriers set by denominational separation supported by church hierarchy.
The next aspect dealt with was the relations of the Romanian Church
United with Rome with the Catholic autonomy from Hungary, to which
we dedicated one chapter in the book. The autonomy entered the political-
ecclesiastical debate from Hungary in the early 1870s, but our research goes
beyond the year
1892
(Vancea s death) in order to include the second series of
conferences and congresses on the issue after
1897
and to offer a panoramic
view of it. The project of Catholic autonomy in Hungaiy represented a major
challenge for the Romanian Greek-Catholic church, which was in this way
compelled to develop its own ideology of ecclesiastical autonomy and to affirm
its own identity.
In the last chapter the accent shifts from the organization of the
ecclesiastical institution onto the society, in other words to the religious life
within the parish. We have pointed out two types of religious alterity: The
Orthodox image with the Greek-Catholic, and the Greek-Catholic image with
the Roman Catholic. In building up the identity and designating alterity there
are, apart from the elements pertaining to ecclesiastical life, national criteria,
which tend to predominate in the image of the other . Thus, we had in view
the investigation of some of the aspects that could decode the religious reelings
and everyday practice. Naturally, the sources do not allow a complete research of
religious practices, but they give us the picture of a rural Christianity, strongly
attached to rite, marked by the omnipresence and constant character of Sunday
and Paschal religious practice. In the same last chapter, we tried to reconstitute
the missionary idea of the Romanian Greek-Catholic elite, which found its

expression
in the projects of expanding the religious union among Romanians
and of building up a powerful institutional structure by elevating the Greek-
Catholic Metropolis in Transylvania to the highest ecclesiastical rank, that of a
patriarchy. Also, our book mentions for the first time the idea of elevating the
Romanian hierarch to the dignity of cardinal, which was completely new in the
19th century. Yet, the conversions to the Greek-Catholic church were far below
the intentions expressed by the papacy in a period of time when the borderline
between the two Romanian denominations, Orthodox and Greek-Catholic, had
stabilised.
