adam_text | Thirty years after its first appearance, and
almost a decade after it was nominated by Time
magazine as the Album of the Century, Exodus
continues to convey the clearest possible
impression of Bob Marley
-
the singer, the
lyricist, the musician, the bandleader, the
philosopher, the lover, the icon of a people
-
at
the height of his remarkable powers.
By the time he came to make it, the initial
battle for the recognition of reqqae had been
won. Thanks in large part to Marley s efforts, the
music of a small Caribbean island had become
an international language; in the process, he had
earned worldwide acclamation as its foremost
exponent. But the battle for survival was just
beginning. Having narrowly escaped a hail of
bullets in Jamaica, he arrived in London in the
first week of
1977
and set to work on his fifth
studio album.
This book describes how and why, at the age of
32
and in the fullness of his creative maturity, he
chose the theme of redemption in its many forms:
the spiritual redemption of his fellow descendants
of the Rfrican diaspora and of mankind in qeneral
in the awesomely powerful title track in One Love ,
the redemptive power of sexual attraction in Turn
Your Lights Down Low and of romantic ardour in
Waiting in Vain .
Lloyd Bradley outlines a story that began
with an assassination attempt and ended with
a peace concert, events that sandwiched the
extraordinarily fruitful encounter between Marley
and an emerging movement of disaffected British
youth: the
punky
reggae party , as he called it,
which took place in London in the year of the
Queen s Silver Jubilee. Vivien Goldman describes
the mood of excitement surrounding the recording
sessions in two West London basement studios.
Richard Williams reconstructs an impromptu
football match that interrupted the sessions
and illustrates Marley s love of the game. Robert
Christgau
looks at how Exodus helped Marley to
increase his audience in the United States and
to win over the sceptics, including the author.
Neil Spencer remembers the atmosphere at the
historic concert during which Marley persuaded
Jamaica s warring politicians to link hands, if only
for a moment, find
Unton
Kwesi Johnson examines
the poetry of Marley s lyrics, with their biblical
allusions and rich borrowings from the street.
Defiant in the face of adversity, suffused
with yearning for a state of heavenly grace on
earth, Exodus stands as the definitive statement
of the concerns and the artistry of
aman
who,
while himself marked by many of humanity s
imperfections, rose from the obscurity of a Third
World shanty town to become one of the 20th
century s most beloved and inspiring figures, with
a message that speaks across the generations
to people of every colour and creed. This is how it
came to pass.
