Transformation. Elites. Society
What is the Polish reality
-
here and now? And how can
it be assessed from the seventeen years perspective of the
Polish transformation? The answer is not an easy one: a lot
depends on who is answering. An answer given by intellectuals,
scientists and researchers of the topic, by successful persons,
by a large part of Polish political elites would be that the
Third
Rzeczpospolita
is a political, economic and social success
story. On the other hand, an answer given by transformation
losers
-
the poor, the uneducated, people from small towns and
villages
-
as well as the larger part of the ruling elites, would
consist of populist slogans about lost chances of the Polish
nation and unjust enrichment of the reform winners
—
leading
to pauperization of the major part of the society and to uneven
distribution of the reform burden. And reform winners
being post-Communists, pro-Solidarity politicians, dishonest
businessmen and criminals.
The problem is complicated, because each answer reflects
the real dilemmas and reasons. In fact, the assessment of the
Polish transformation as a success seems to be closer to the
truth, but the opinions of the unjust distribution of the reform
burden, mass exclusion from consuming the reform fruits and
unfair enrichment of the transformation winners to a large
extent reflect the real processes and results.

Summary
Transformation. Elites. Society is a book in which the
authors try to present a well-balanced picture of certain aspects
of the Polish reality. They do it analyzing both the hard data
on this reality ( what is the reality ) and opinions of the society
and its elites ( how this reality is being perceived ). In other
words, they try to confront objective indices of the present state
of affairs with subjective opinions formed by life experience and
political views.
Special attention should be paid to interviews held with
the members of the elites who in
2005
were
crème de la crème
of the Polish political scene. There were not only MPs, as
in surveys conducted by other researchers, but also persons
who played more important role
-
decision-makers and the
main authors of the Polish transformation (prime ministers,
ministers, speakers of the Parliament, largest parties leaders,
and the most prominent experts. The authors are sure that it
is important to know not only the facts but also the state of
mentality.

What is the Polish reality

here and now? And how can
