Book fairs have been taking place for more than half a thousand years.
Besides fairs which were reactivated after the Second World War in their
traditional centres such as Frankfurt a. Main and Leipzig
-
also dozens of
new book fairs appeared all over the world since middle fifties till now. In¬
ternational book fairs organized in Poland for the first time in
1956
at in¬
ternational industrial fair in
Poznań
were an example of one of those first
new fairs. Also the second edition of fairs took place in
Poznań
a year la¬
ter. After moving the fair to Warsaw in
1958
they were often described as
„Warsaw Book Fair (later called MTK
-
Międzynarodowe Targi Książki
=
International Book Fair).
Ars Polona,
who is the organiser of Internatio¬
nal Book Fair including its beginning in
Poznań,
continues numeration of
Fairs as a symbol of their organizational continuity. And so, at present, in
2005
the 50th MTK anniversary is taking place, but
-

of Culture
-
for the 48th time.
The first chapter of this work describes brief history of book fairs from
their beginning in Frankfurt a. Main at the end of XV century till outbreak
of the Second World War and development of book fairs all over the world
till the end of XX century.
Chapter two includes description of
Poznań
beginnings of MTK and its
development till
1989,
after it had been moved to Warsaw. Circumstances, li¬
mitations and specification of MTK in Poland governed by communist system

was discussed here. There is description of obstacles which MTK
had to overcome in order to develop, when the whole economy, including
import and export were centrally administered by Government. At that time
Polish people were isolated from western publications. Access to „hard cur¬
rency was limited, and imported books (also those presented at MTK) were
subject to censorship. Simultaneously import of editions from Soviet Union
and from the so called „socialist countries was practically going on without
any limitations. But in the sixties and seventies of XX century MTK got opi¬
nion of the biggest fair event at the meeting point of East
-
West. The years
1979-1989
are the time of regress and stagnation for MTK caused by deep
economic and social crisis. In spite of numerous barriers: political, ideologi¬
cal and economical, International Book Fair in Warsaw gained a good repu¬
tation all over the world during thirty four years
-
till
1989.
Till
1989
MTK
was the only window on the world for most of the Polish people. It was only
at the Fair that they were able to see
-
or even to buy sometimes
-
a foreign
western book. At the time of „the Iron Curtain and omnipresent censorship
they were unique, peculiar glass case of western literature, which was visited
by crowds of people not only from Warsaw but from the whole Poland.
The third chapter describes changes which took place in function,
specificity (profile), organization and atmosphere of MTK which were re¬
flection of changes taking place in Poland after
1989.
Crucial changes in
political system, which took place after
1989
had strong influence on sha¬
pe and character of MTK as well as on legal status of
Ars Polona
-
Fair
organizer. In the nineties
Ars Polona
started a long
-
lasting for almost ten
years
-
difficult process of ownership transformations which resulted in
creating joint-stock company in
2000.
Such a long period of transformation
must have left trace on current activity and position of both
Ars Polona
and
MTK organized by it. At that time there was no more compulsion to realise
import and export with the help of licensed distribution channels such as
Ars Polona
-
a real market was created, more than ten new, private compa¬
nies
-
Ars Polona
competitors
-
came into being. Censorship was cancelled.
MTK lost status of the only channel of access to world literature. In
1992
majority of thirty seven MTK stands were let at disposal of Polish editors.
That is a sign of development and buoyancy of Polish publishing houses, but

also a signal of changes which were taking place. That is a signal, a kind of
introduction to discussion on formula and future of MTK
-
discussion and
criticism which, with different intensification, lasts till the present day. In
the nineties direct participation of foreign publishers in MTK was getting
smaller, and on the other hand participation and importance of both litera¬
ture in Polish language and Polish publishers were growing significantly.
At MTK, a custom taken from Frankfurt fairs, has been established
-
a cu¬
stom of inviting particular countries as guest of honour of the Fairs. MTK
formula has been changed; series of trade events for professionals have been
joined with cultural events (author s meetings, discussions, presentations,
exhibitions, etc.) which have been directed towards the general fair public.
But importance of International Book Fair in Warsaw is established and
proved by fixed number of countries which take part in it
(27
countries in
2005).
Many years tradition, favourable geographical situation of Warsaw,
and size of book market in Poland speak in favour of MTK.
The book also includes comparisons of important MTK statistical data
as well as
Ars Polona
calendars,
Ars Polona
managers and secretaries of
International Book Fairs in Warsaw.
