On the Gentry s Celebration of Christmas and Easter.
Christmas and Easter traditions
in the circle of polish landed gentry in the latter part
of the 19th and first part of the 20th century
Abstract
The present book is mainly based on the published remembrances of landowners. It fo¬
cuses its attention on preparations and celebrations of the both holidays by Roman Catholic
gentry families spending the holidays in the country, but at the same time includes certain
folk threads related to the gentry celebrations. The book pertains to the broad circle of
landowners , understood as
a socio-cultural
group and not only as the owners of great
landed estates. The book is illustrated mainly by the reproductions of the prints published
in periodicals and paintings reproduced on postcards.
The beginning of the Advent Season would bring an end to all parties, balls, weddings
etc. Preparations for Christmas included, among other things, fasting and going to Mass,
shopping in town, preparing Christmas tree decorations and gifts. There was also a home
slaughter of pigs and meat processing. Few days before Christmas Eve a housecleaning and
culinary works would begin, including preparation of fish, baking of gingerbreads and
other cakes. The day before Christmas Eve or on the very day the Christmas tree would be
brought to the house and locked in the salon, away from the eyes of children. Priests or
church organists would bring the Christmas wafers. The youth would come home from
schools and the invited
gests
would come on a visit to the manor. In the morning on
Christmas Eve the gentlemen would go hunting, while the lady of the house supervised the
servants preparing the Christmas Eve dinner. On this day the Christmas tree would be
decorated. Often in the corners of the dining room the crop sheaves would be put, and
a handful of hay under the white tablecloth. After the first star had appeared, the Christmas
Eve dinner began with sharing the wafer and Christmas wishes. The number of dishes ranged
from seven to twelve. There was never meat served, but always a soup, fish dishes, stewed
dried fruit and mixed dried citrus fruit and nuts. There were also many other dishes as, for
example,
a kutia
on the Polish eastern frontier, traditional dish made of wheat, poppy seeds
and honey. After the dinner Christmas carols were sung and the gifts handed out in the
salon by the tree. Usually also, if the weather and distance to the nearest church permitted,
all would go to the

Christmas Mass celebrated at midnight or early in the morn¬
ing. On the first day of the Christmas celebration (December 26th) the

visiting friends and
family and having fun. On the Christmas days the manor house would be visited by estate
workers and villagers with Christmas wishes, and they would be received with food and
drinks; there would also come diverse groups singing Christmas carols and a parish priest
with a pastoral visit called
Po Kolędzie1.
The Christmas time ended on the day of Epiphany,
but the carnival lasted until Shrove Tuesday.

Abstract
On Ash Wednesday the Lent began, with fasting and going to church for Mass, Passion
sermons and retreats. On the Polish eastern frontier, where the distance to the nearest church
was large, the priests would come to the manors to hear confessions and celebrate Mass. In
the home and park, in the garden and grange the preparations for Easter would be carried
out, including general cleaning. There was shopping in town, and a home slaughter of pigs
and meat processing, also baking of cakes. Gardeners would prepare the flowers for home
and church. Women, young people and children would make the Easter eggs, i.e. coloured
and decorated eggs to decorate the Easter table, play with and offer as a gift. The youth would
come home from schools. On Palm Sunday all would went to church with handmade
Eastern palms, and during Passion Week they would go to Mass and fast; fasting was se¬
verely observed on Good Friday. From Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday) to Holy Saturday
they would mortify their bodies and no music was played. In the afternoon of Good Friday
and on Holy Saturday they would visit the churches to see the Tombs of the Lord Jesus
arranged there. On Good Friday the first guests would arrive in the house, and on Holy
Saturday morning the blessed food was prepared on the table. Its centrepiece was a roasted
or smoked piglet, or its head only, with an egg placed in its mouth. There would be ample
amount of confections and sweets, first and foremost Easter
baba
cakes and lots of
mazurek
(traditional Polish Easter flat cake, covered with paste of nuts, almonds etc., colourfully iced
and decorated, with imaginative decorations on the top); there was also an Easter lamb made,
for instance, of sugar. For younger children the small table would be prepared with miniature
dishes. There would be also a table for servants and blessed food for the poor. On this day
the priests would come to consecrate in front of the manor the food brought by the villagers
in the baskets and the landowners table in the house. Early in the morning of Easter Sunday,
and occasionally on Holy Saturday, all would go for Resurrection service, i.e. Holy Mass with
a procession. Sometimes the morning Mass was celebrated in a private chapel. After the
Resurrection Mass the manor would be visited by servants, estate workers and frequently
also villagers with Easter wishes for die landowners family. After the Resurrection service the
household and invited guests would share the consecrated food, i.e. a solemn breakfast or
diner, consisting mainly of cold food. First, the Easter wishes would be extended with a piece
of the Easter egg. The consecrated food usually lasted for the following Easter days, sometimes
even longer. Easter Sunday was spent at home, in the family circle, but Easter Monday was
for entertaining and socialising. The gentry spent their holidays on eating and amusing
themselves. On Easter Monday, traditionally called also Smigus-Dyngus they would go for
Mass, but a main feature was a custom of splashing
-
or pouring
-
water on one another.
In this participated mainly the youth and children, but nonetheless it was secured with
numerous rules. By the end of die Easter Holidays the guest stuffed with food would prepare
to take their leave, and a life in the landowners estate would go back to normal.
The landowners prepared for their holidays very conscientiously and celebrated them in
a very special way, not to be observed in other social groups. Not only had they necessary
means, but also the skills and predispositions to great celebrations which inscribed into the
widely understood culture and arts. Despite numerous similarities between the celebration
in the landowner stratum there were also differences, depending on various factors. Christmas
and Easter customs changed slowly in the circle of Polish landed gentry. The landowners
reluctandy broke with the tradition cherished and preserved by the generations, and all
novelties were treated with great caution and circumspection. And, what is important, the
Christmas and Easter seasons were bringing closer the gentry, estate workers and villagers.
