Józef Piłsudski
most instructive in terms
of general knowledge are the books:

1863
and The Year
1920
as well as the series of lectures Outline of War History of the
January Insurrection. It is after those items that interested students
reach most often. Some people utilize also his studies of Napoleon¬
ic Wars, the Boer war, Russian-Japanese Conflict and the wars in the
Balkan. Use is also made of his memories
(Ożarów, Czeremoszno,
My First Battles) as well as of his sketches based on historical mate¬
rials. It is in the historical lectures and in the Marshall s other writings
that historians find a good deal of factographical data; they also dis¬
cover in them generalizing perceptions and unconventional reflections
based on the author s personal experiences.
By his historical works
Piłsudski
went a long way towards the sin¬
gling out of the history of warfare and armies as a specific and inde¬
pendent branch of research. He also had his share in pushing the time
limit beyond the beginning of the XXth century, at least in the range
of Polish historians. At the same time he helped to make general histo¬
ry, particularly other than European, the object of increased interest of
both the general readers and researchers.
Owing to his readings, his own research, contacts and conver¬
sations with friendly historians he acquired the knowledge of basic
elements of a regular equipment needed by scholars professionally ex¬
ploring the past. Owing to that, his research was methodologically
correct. What deserves emphasis is the skill in accumulating docu¬
mentary materials in agreement with scientific requirements together
with their critical examination and assessment as well as the command
of the rules concerning composition. It is thanks to these qualities that

Pilsudski s works have kept until now a good
deal of desirable assets. Doubts may only arise in connection with his
excessively personal attitude to the authors of whose works he makes
use as well as his relying on moral and political criteria in his assess¬
ment of certain types of the sources (depositions or memoirs).
In the historical works by
Piłsudski
one notices the influence of
neoromantic
approach, stressing personal experience , the power of
the mind , emphasizing the importance of individual psychology, set¬
ting off the difference between biological and sociological factors. He
was inclined to follow currents of thought opposed to naturalism and
positivism, though he did not favour any of them to the exclusion of
others. In spite of his long-standing membership of the socialist party
(PPS),
it would be difficult to trace in his ideas more pronounced in¬
fluence of marxism, even in the texts written before the outbreak of
the First World War.
Piłsudski
started his regular historical research in
1908.
His inter¬
est in history was prompted by his pragmatic attitude. Together with
the whole team aiming at the recovery of national independence, he
was training himself for the future military activity. His knowledge
of the history of warfare, particularly recent one, was helpful for this.
In the nineteen twenties however greater and greater influence on his
interests was dictated by reasons coming from considerations outside
politics. It was thus that the study of history, initially ancillary to pol¬
itics, acquired an independent position of its own. It was then that the
role of
Piłsudski
as historian of warfare only at certain moments was
to complete his primarily political activity.
