SUMMARY
VADIM
S.
NIKOLAEV. «NOMADS BURIAL COMPLEXES OF THE MIDDLE
SIBERIA SOUTH IN THE XII-XIV CENTURY; UST-TALKiNSKAYA CULTURE»
Monogragh of
Vadim
S. Nikolaev
is the first resumptive research that it is devoted to
comprehensive analysis of burial custom data of human being and animals (horse and cow)
from the south of the Middle Siberia territory.
Monograth consists of Introduction, Conclusion, five Chapters, References List and it is
provided with the analytical tables (based on the text) and the illustrations (the final section).
In Introduction, the theme s actuality
ís
proven, the researched area physiographic
characteristics is provided. The south of the Middle Siberia territory is the territory that
includes forest-steppe area of the southern part of Angara-river, upper reaches of Lena-river
and Kansk-Achinsk forest-steppe, Peculiar geographic layout determined relatively high
territorial saturation by the archeological objects of medieval epoch
—
settlements, sites of
ancient settlement and burial grounds. However, there has not been any summarized research
on the above mentioned
archeologica]
objects. Actuality of the performed research is the
following: first, summarizing and systematizing the accumulated archaeological materials on
burial complexes of the south of Middle Siberia; second, introducing them into the scientific
circulation that allows to revise many aspects of the region s medieval history considerably;
considering differently the process of modern Siberian ethnos formation
—
Buryat and
Yakut.
Chapter I. This chapter is devoted to the history of studying the region s medieval
archeological monuments and to the scientific problems the author came across in the process
of research. The beginning of archeological studying was initiated by the researchers at the
end of the
XIX
century
—
at the beginning of the XX century
—
in the works of
N.
Agapitov,
G. Sosnovskiy, B.
Petry,
P. Horoshih,
I. Konštantínov.
Illese
researchers characterized the
discovered monuments, contemplated the perspectives of studying the Iron Age of the
region.
In the 30-SOs of the XX century the archaeological researches in Predbaikal region were
performed by the academician A. Okladnikov and his follower
N. Zabelina
and H. Sedyakina.
In the
60s
of the XX century I. Aseev and V. Svinin started the studying of the Iron Age. In the
SOs
of the XX century M. Zaitseva» O. Gorjtinova, V. Pavlutskaya, B. Dashibalov» A. Harinskiy,
V. Smotrova and
0.
Varlamova started the studying of medieval monuments.
In the following years the researchers of medieval objects of the south of Middle Siberia
have been performed by V. Nikolaev. During seven excavation seasons (19S9,
1990, 1993,
1999-2001, 2003)
the author excavated
45
funeral and
3
ritual complexes of the medieval
epoch.
Chapter
И.
Complete description of the excavation results of
158
burial and of
6
ritual
complexes, that were excavated by the previous generations of researchers as well as by the
author himself from
1989
to
2003
is provided in this Chapter. These sites are concentrated
in five big necropolis: «Ust-Tolkln», «Doglan», «Shebuty-IIb, «Ust-Uda», «Ozeroyu» and
«Segenutskiy» and in two single burial places
«Uda»
and «Galki» (picture

Chapter
Ш.
This chapter is devoted to the detailed analysis, systematization and typology
of the artfacts complex from excavated burial sites.
In this Chapter three main characteristics of burial implements are considered: functional
(the thing itself and how it was used), chronological (timing period), social (correlation of the
artfact with the deceased). The correlation of artfacts with the artfacts from the contiguous
territories of Siberia and Central Asia is performed. Complexes dating XII-XIV
A.D.
is
proposed on basis of system-typological method.
Chapter IV. This chapter is devoted to the comprehensive analysis of the burial ceremony
of the population that left the described in Chapter III burial complexes. The analysis of burial
complexes topography and of planigraphy is performed, external and internal constructions of
burial complexes and difficult location and position of the buried are systematized. Cenotaphs,
burial places of animals and their main functions in burial ceremony of the nomads of the south
of Siberia are considered separately. Systematization and analysis of available ritual complexes
is performed. Obtained results allowed the researcher to distinguish the new archeological
culture, that he named after the first excavated burial ground «Ust-Talkin»
—
«ust-talkinskiy»
and to distinguish two burial groups that have the distinctions concerning the details of burial
custom: doglanskaya and ust-udinskaya.
Chapter V. The detailed analysis of the dating problems of the distinguished culture is
given, radiocarbon dating of burials bones remains are provided, (table
20)
On the basis of
achieved radiocarbon dating and analysis performed in Chapter IV, two consecutive stages of
the development of Ust-Talkinsliy culture are established; doglanskiy
— XII
century
—
first
part of
XIII
century and ust-udinskiy
—
second part of
XIII
century
— XIV
century.
Further on, the chapter deals with the possible culture origin, the data on medieval burial
complexes of the south of the Middle Siberia and contiguous territories are systematized. The
obtained data prove that the appearance of the culture is the consequence of the nomads
migration from Sayan- Altay upland region to the territory of the south of Middle Siberia. The
dominant cause of this migration, according to the researcher, is the activation of Mongol tribes
Kidan
and Naiman. in the
Х-ХП
century.Analyzing the existing written records (Rashid-ad
Din, Yuan-chao bi shi,
Altan
tochbi) the researcher came to conclusion that Ust-Talkinskaya
culture belongs to Tumat family.
The Chapter completes with the ethnographical materials analysis of Buryats and Yakut
burial ceremony dated to XVII-XIX century. Burials with horses excavated on the territory of
modern Yakutiya and also numerous folk materials of Yakut epos, let the researcher suppose
the subsequent migration of the representatives of Ust-Talkinskaya culture
—
tumats in
XVI
century on the territory of Yakutia. Author considers that tumats participated in a very active
way in Yakut and Buryat ethnologic formation in XVI-XVII century.
In conclusion the results of the research are summarized, the appropriate problems are
allocated and new tasks in researching the region s medieval history are posed.
