A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
The difficult history of Poland caused that many
citizens, despite their will, had to decide to emigrate.
Their complex and painful fates were caused by their
economic situations as well as unfavorable political
conditions. The loss of their own nation, wars, change
of borders, deportation, or totalitarian systems caused
further waves of emigration. As a result of these facts,
Polish communities can be found in the majority of
European and Asian countries, both North and South
America, Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Each of
these communities possesses an individual characteris¬
tic and common history. As a historical fact it is an
important and interesting subject of academic research.
This book given to the reader is dedicated to the
history of Polish children, who in
1944
arrived in New
Zealand. Orphaned by those who were sent with them
to
Syberia
during the Second World War, they were
saved thanks to political-social efforts and the care of
many care-takers. The book is a description of the
sending, journeys, settlement and efforts of Poles
who wanted to maintain their identity in a country

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
and culture, which was to be a temporary shelter and
became a home for many long years. The goal of this
publication is to make the reader familiar with these
events and to show the many-years efforts of this Polish
community to maintain their Polish identity. It is an
even more urgent assignment because for many years
in post-war Poland it was a historical event whose
mentioning was politically incorrect and kept quite
on purpose.
The published book contains three types of mate¬
rials. The first includes texts that arose based on
histo¬
riographie
sources. Among them are the articles of
prof.
Mieczysław Wieliczko,
prof.
Andrzej Chodubski,
mgr Dariusz
Zdziech as well as
fr.
dr Józef Szymański.
The second type of articles contains the written memo¬
ries of those who personally lived through exile to
Syberia,
exodus from the USSR and life in immigra¬
tion. Thanks to publications by Wanda Ellis,
Stanisław
Manterys and
Stefania Zawada,
the described journeys
of the
Polonia
become a living history because they
continually have their living witnesses. The third
group is composed of materials that arose in the days
of the discussed history and comprise a register of
events occurring at that time. To these belongs the
diary of fr.
Michał Wilniewczyc
the pastor of the camp
in Pahiatua edited by fr.
Włodzimierz Wieczorek
and
a film from
1944
is added to the book that registers the
coming of Polish children to New Zealand.
The broad context of the creation of this publica¬
tion includes the jubilee celebrations of those events.
They took place in Wellington and Auckland in New
Zealand in
2004

The circumstances caused that
the following publication was honored to have the
input of the Speaker of the Senate of the Republic of
Poland
Bogdan Borusewicz
and Ambassador of New
Zealand in Poland Philip Griffiths as well as CUL s
Rector, fr. prof.
Stanisław Wilk.
Apart from the above-mentioned authors, we
should include the people of Lublin to those suppor¬
ting the wide project of transmitting the history of the
Polish Children from Pahiatua to those who deserve
thanks. The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Po¬
land in New Zealand John Roy-Wojciechowski,
Prorec¬
tor
fr.
prof.
Mirosław Kalinowski
for Matters of Educa¬
tion, Foreign Cooperation and Promoting the Universi¬
ty, as well as Lublin municipal government authorities
and the group of workers from CUL s International
Relations Office. Thanks to the cooperation of the
mentioned people the destiny of the Polish emigration
in New Zealand became the subject of interest for
several significant initiatives. These include: the Inter¬
national Academic Symposium at
CUL on
May
10 2006,
book and press publications and giving Lublin a place
called The Plaza for Pahiatuas Children, at which
a commemorative memorial plaque was cemented.
Special thanks ought to also be given to the Nation
Archives of New Zealand, which granted
KUL
the right
to publish the film from their own collections from
1944
on New Zealands soldiers and the Polish children
from Pahiatua.

A WORD FROM THE EDITOR
Pole on pilgrimage is not called a wanderer, since
a wanderer is a lost person without a goal
[...].
Howe¬
ver, a Pole is called a pilgrim, since he has sworn an
oath with his journey to the Holy Land, the free Father¬
land, and has bond himself to journey until he finds it .
(A. Mickiewicz,

I recommend the following publication to
readers interested in history and the unusual witness
of the attitude of the Polish pilgrims who remained
faithful to the Fatherland even at the cost of great
suffering and efforts in maintaining their national iden¬
tity in conditions greatly different than those in which
they were born.
