Russian immigrants in Pancevo
1919-1941
Summary
The settlement of Russian immigrants in Pancevo began with the first
wave of Russian immigration to the Kingdom of Yugoslavia
(1919).
Due to
the proximity of Belgrade
(20
km), the Russian colony in Pancevo became one
of major Russian settlements in the Kingdom. Over different periods of time it
numbered
500
to
1200
members.
The Russian sanatorium with the Red Cross founded by King Alexander
I The Uniter which was found in Pancevo on March 10th
1920,
rendered
particular significance to this colony. The sanatorium housed renowned
Russian doctors, and it was there that Russian immigrants from all over the
Kingdom of Yugoslavia sought cure. It became a gathering place for all the
town Russians where they nurtured their national culture and language. V.
Gordovsky, a famous Russian publicist, came to visit a number of times and
wrote about its importance to the Russian immigrants (at the 20th anniversary of
the Sanatorium): Yes, it is a good place; we do not feel like being in hospital.
Thanks to the proverbial Russian cordiality of the doctors and other medical
staff, we feel at home here, like members of an extended family where the great
principle of love for thy neighbour and help to all people is put to practice.
Hundreds and thousands of the exhausted and the sick receive help here. They
come here to die; the old and bed-driven come here to find the last attention and
tenderness. Under the supervision of Dr. A.S. Mandrusov many future Russian
citizens were brought to this world here. In the life of the Russian immigration
in Pancevo, this Sanatorium is more than a need
(...)
In twenty years of my
stay, the days I have spent here are my best memories. It is here that I have
found true peace, kindness, attention, a spiritual and physical ease.
..
There was also a big Church Community in Pancevo in the period between
the world wars, and also a Chapel of St. Nicolas within the Sanatorium facility.
About
1060
Russian have been buried in the local orthodox cemetery. Today,
only about
50
gravestones remained.
Many Russians who were distinguished names in politics, art or science
stayed or lived in Pancevo. The famous Russian scientist Vladimir Alekseevich
Moshin, Ilya Nikolaevich Golenishchev-Kutuzov, the poetess Ekaterina
Leonidovna
Tauber,
Yuri Victorovich Ofrosimoff and many others. On a
number of occasions the Russian general Peter Nikolaevich Vrangel also visited
Pancevo. A significant date in the history of Russian immigration in Pancevo
259
can be September 20th
1922,
when general Vrangel attended the last meeting of
the Russian Council in Pancevo to pass the decision abolishing this National
government in exile.
The Russian immigrants were employed in all fields of activities in
Pancevo
-
in health care, education, city administration, court administration,
engineering.
..
After World War I, Serbia felt a great need for all qualified
professionals. A considerable number of Russian immigrants belonged to the
category of working intelligentsia . According to the available statistics, about
62%
of Russian immigrants who had arrived in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats
and Slovenians had high school education,
13%
had university education and
only
3%
were illiterate.
In the period between the two world wars the Russian and the Serbian
intellectuals had a close cooperation going on, particularly in view of spreading
the idea of pan Slavism and solidarity among Slavic nations. As a result, an
initiative was brought up for the recognition of a movement relating to Russian-
Yugoslav mutual interests and the first Russian-Yugoslav Community was
founded which lead to the founding of similar organizations in Sarajevo and
Zagreb.
The great help that the citizens of Pancevo provided to the Russian
immigrants in charity, cordiality and acceptance and by working in
humanitarian organizations should not be forgotten. Since the first arrivals of
the Russian immigrants in Pancevo, the Organization of the Merciful Sisters
of Serbia and the Pancevo Charity Organization of the Serbian Women joined
in the humanitarian relief work for the immigrants needs. Some significant
humanitarian actions of these organizations were carried out in
1923
when a
monetary fund was establish to serve for the sole purpose of helping the most
impoverished Russians and their families who had settled in Pancevo. In
1924
a Russian Kitchen was founded to take care of the nutrition needs of the poor
Russian citizens.
The second part of the book encloses a bibliography of writings about the
Russian immigration from the periodicals published in Pancevo between the
two world wars, registry lists of the born, married and the deceased Russian
immigrants construed on the basis of Registry records of the Russian Church of
St. Nikolai with the Russian Hospital.
