Summary
The Slovenian composer, conductor, teacher and Honourable Doctor of
Music,
ZVONIMIR CIGLIC,
is presented as a creative artist. He was born
on February
20,1921
in Ljubljana, where he remained musically active and
apolitical throughout his long career, including the difficult years of the
second World War:
His musical life began as a schoolboy and continued as a student at the
Music Academy in Ljubljana, where his teachers and mentors in composition
and conducting were Lucijan
Marija Škerjanc
and
Danilo Švara,
PhD. He
graduated from the Academy with degrees in both subjects in
1948.
He was
imprisoned three times:
during the second world war he was held at the Italian concentration
camp in Gonars
(1942),
and immediately after the end of WW2
(1945)
spent
three months at the Ljubljana prison due to a violation of cultural silence
stemming from his apolitical attitude during that war. He also survived
9-
months of solitary confinement in
Karlovac
and Zagreb, Croatia
(1950/51),
unjustly accused of anti-communist propaganda and subversion of the
regulations of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia . During this
heavy suffering,
Ciglič
dedicated himself firstly to his conducting career.
Due to his growing popularity in a relatively short period of time
(1948-60),
he soon became perceived as a threat to the then predominating cultural
establishment in Ljubljana.
His interpretations were among the first in this region to offer the
conducting of large (symphonic) works by heart, but his other conducting
qualities must be emphasized as well:
temperament, musicality, suggestiveness, elaborated technique,
exceptionally reliable (photographic) memory and personal sense of musical
culture.
It is therefore not surprising that according to the accessible evaluations
and reviews, he has remained a formal advocate of the
Matačić
school of
conducting in this region; after all, he took leave as a kind of unplanned
conducting assistant to Maestro
Matačić. Ciglič
started and finished this
performing fragment of musical activity in Sarajevo, continuing it in
Subotica
and through two further studies in Salzburg (with L. v.
Matačić)
and Paris
(with I. Markevitch), and ending it very early in Ljubljana. He finished his
professional musical career as a teacher of music theory (counterpoint and
270__________________________________________________________.
harmony) at the Ljubljana School for Music and Ballet, as well as at the
Academy of Pedagogy
(1957-73).
Ciglič
started to write (piano) compositions from very early on. This
is his point of departure and this is where he continues to write his works
based on his own
pianistic
performing, since from the beginning he was
a distinguished pianist. Despite a relatively long productive time span
(1934-83),
there was a much shorter creative ascent and descent period
with
Ciglič,
lasting from the climax
(1941-46)
to the finale
(1946-65);
but
his creative activity endured from the time he was
3
years old
(Ciglič
still
remembers a little snail he had saved at the
Rožnik
Hill in Ljubljana), until
his final work, Divine Absurd
(1983).
Next to his three symphonies:
Appassionata
Symphony
(1943-48),
Shore of Female Dancers (Symphony
of Ecstasy, symphonic choreographic poem, ballet;
1952)
and the
Števerjan
Symphony
(1956),
Ciglič s
most important works (within the Slovenian and
broader European context) are all those that are in a way connected to
the harp: Adagio amoroso (for harp solo;
1948),
Concertino for harp and
string orchestra (with the unique usuoni eolici/eolic tones , as a composer s
invention;
1960)
and Sublimation for horn and harp
(1967).
The composer has
used modern musical means throughout his very diversified artistic output,
though without avant-garde tendencies. During his career, he was inspired
by impressionistic and expressionistic achievements. Due to his ecstatic life,
his works are distinguished by a strong, elementary conditioned expression,
which can be partially sensed already in his conducting. In his works and
his creative process, one can furthermore trace the solution of a certain
problem, comprised within the loosening of a mobile energy, conditioned
by releasing a creative thought, and divided by the author
(Ciglič)
himself
into three stages: intuition, ecstasy and mind treatment.
Following the forewords of Professor
Primož
Kuret, PhD,
Geza Filo,
M.
A. (an Evangelical priest
-
the faith into which
Ciglič
entered in
1996)
and
Vladimir
Žumer, M.
Α.,
who in the name of the Archives of the Republic of
Slovenia has been in charge of the acceptance, editing, preservation, and
complementation of
Ciglič s
heritage, and after the Introduction by Franc
Križnar, PhD,
where the whole creative output has been described based
on personal conversations with Z.
Ciglič
during
2005,
it continues with the
author s motto:
that he is a CREATIVE ARTIST, who was born as such, and not merely
working as one, and this has been proved by the fact that within the twilight
of a (prison) cell, under severe repression, without a pencil, paper, piano,
and without anything, he had conceived the music that was only later
entitled THE SHORE OF WOMEN DANCERS . He had been composing into
____________________________________________________________271
the creative part of his brain! When released from prison, after a short rest
in
1952,
he started to write down what he had conceived in captivity. This
was proof of his remarkable memory. Subsequently, the following chapters
are presented:
From Beginning to Climax, through Illness nil End,
Medical Diagnosis,
Composition,
Conducting.
Then, a series of
Ciglič s
metaphors follows, where along with the life
and creative comparisons by Leonardo da Vinci
(1452-1519),
Ciglič
critically
meditates on interesting musical events and personalities:
