Eye movements:
A window on mind and brain
Through the study of eye movements we can learn much about the human mind and
brain. Knowing the pattern of our fixations
-
where, when and for how long we look
-
reveals how our brain processes the information that surrounds us. In this sense, eye
movements are a true window through which we can observe the workings of mind
and brain. It ¡s therefore no surprise that eye-movement recording has become the
method of choice in a wide variety of disciplines investigating how the mind and brain
work. This volume brings together recent, high-quality eye-movement research from
many different disciplines and, in doing so, presents a comprehensive overview of the
state-of-the-art in eye-movement research. It includes sections on the history of eye-
movement research, physiological and clinical studies of eye movements, transsaccadic
integration, computational modelling of eye movements, reading, spoken language
processing, attention and scene perception, and eye-movements in natural environments.
Each section begins with an overview chapter that provides a critical review of current
research, and is followed by chapters presenting the latest findings in each topic area.
This volume will appeal to students and scholars working on eye-movements as well as
those interested in the history of science, medical scientists, neurophysiologists, vision
researchers, psychologists, cognitive scientists, language researchers interested in both
reading and spoken language, and applied scientists.
