Towards Integration with the Crown. Volhynian
and Ukrainian Dietines in
1569-1648
Abstract
The book is dedicated to the dietines in these territories of the Crown that had been
integrated into it at the Lublin
Sejm
of
1569.
Thus the analysis encompassed the assemblies
of the nobility in the provinces of: Volhynia, Kiev and Braclaw. The chronological range of
the research spans the period marked by two breakthrough events in the history of Volhynia
and Ukraine: the Union of Lublin
(1569)
and Cossack Uprising under
Bohdan Chmielnicki
(1648).
The main purpose of the book is to answer the question of the scope of political
integration of the incorporated provinces into the Polish Crown in
1569-1648.
The author turned his attention to the political system and functioning of the nobility
assemblies of Volhynia and Ukraine as well as political attitudes of the
Ruthenian
nobility.
The main emphasis, however, was put on the latter aspect, and the attempt was made to
observe the changes in the political awareness of the citizens over a span of
80
years after
the Lublin Union. In this way the author wanted to asses whether the nobility of the incor¬
porated territories was able to adopt the institution of dietine to their own needs.
The main source basis of the book are dietine resolutions which are of great significance
for the study of noble ideas and outlooks since usually they were resultant of the ideas
common in dietine district. As regards the south-eastern territories of the Commonwealth,
we face a great problem here
-
a state of preserved dietines records which were very much
destroyed during the wars. The situation is a bit better in Volhynia, much wore is the state
of archival material in Ukraine.
Analysing the selected problems, the author attempts to look into the matter in the
appropriate historical context. Using a traditional method of contextual research, he intro¬
duces significant changes. Contrary to the dietines monographs published so far which are
predominantly static, he puts more emphasis on the evolution of analysed phenomena and
opinions. Taking into consideration that in the incorporated territories the diets had been
introduced three years before the Lublin Union, a presentation of the changes dynamics is
of considerable importance for analysing the scope of political integration of these territories
with the Crown. Therefore, the author not only adheres strictly to the chronology of the
events but also uses special methodological measures. In the subchapter dedicated to the
political terminology he makes use of linguists research experiences. The next important
innovation was introduced while examining the the attitude of the incorporated territories
diets toward the king. This was to reveal the circumstances in which changes the statements
expressing esteem for the king s majesty. The author proposes a thesis that the nobility
deliberately constructed their resolutions in specific order: either beginning with the answers
Abstract
435
to the matter presented in the king s legation, or showing their dissatisfaction by beginning
with grievances toward the king.
The research results reveal that the nobility of the incorporated territories adopted the
institution of dietine to their need in a great extent. The first two interregnum periods in
1572-1576
were very important to this process. Following the example of the Crown nobil¬
ity, the
Ruthenian
noblemen organised their own assemblies at which their took appropriate
measures to ensure their security. By the end of the
Іб 1
century in the incorporated terri¬
tories formed all types of the diets known in the Crown. The nobility of those territories
gathered in accordance with the procedures accepted in other parts of the Commonwealth.
The form and structure of their resolutions did not greatly differ from the resolutions of
other dietines. In the 17th century the citizens of Volhynia and Ukraine proved that they
were able to skilfully use the possibilities presented by the political system of the Polish-
Lithuanian Commonwealth. It is worth to notice that that the
Ruthenian
nobility applied
the dietine procedures also to religious life.
The adaptation of the Crown solutions did not mean, however, that the Volhynian and
Ukrainian diets functioned in a totally analogous way and without any complications. In
these territories the conditions for noble gatherings were most difficult for all the Com¬
monwealth. The region was constantly plagued by Tatar invasions, Cossacks licence and
plundering by the Crown army. The hard conditions influenced the course, attendance and
content of the dietines. The nobility often had to decide on prevention of local crises instead
of deliberating about nationwide matters. Another important factor with a negative impact
on functioning of the dietines was the peripherality of the incorporated territories. The
location of Ukraine, far from the core, made it difficult to efficiently inform the nobility about
the sessions.
An important role in the dietine sessions of the incorporated territories was played by
the magnate factions. In Volhynia and Ukraine the position of magnates was very strong,
much stronger than in the Crown and comparable to the status of Lithuanian potentates.
They were able to influence the diet either by personal attendance at the assembly entou-
raged by armed servants or supporting their clients in the elections to the dietine. Despite
great pressure of the magnates some factors could be indicated that showed a gradual
emancipation of the nobility, at least the Volhynian one, from their dominance. It seems that
there was a certain evolution in the relationship between the nobility and the knezes. Till
the end of the 16th century a majority of the Volhynians not only recognised the primacy
and dominance of the magnates but also were obedient to them. With the passage of time
the individual representatives of the nobility began to strive for liberation from the domi¬
nance of the native potentates either through the support of
tlie
Crown magnates or through
the service at the king s court. A significant role in the development of political awareness
of the Volhynian nobility was played by the incomers from the Crown. They were active
especially in the first two decades of the 17th century, when they repeatedly performed a
function of envoy from
Łuck
dietine.
The examination of the dietine resolutions of the incorporated territories confirms the
integrating force of the Commonwealth political system. The nobility of Volhynia and
Ukraine used the same political terminology as the Crown nobility. Thanks to the statistical
analysis we were able to perceive an expansion of Latin language into the incorporate lands.
The investigated Latin terms appeared straight after the
Sandomierz
rebellion. From that
436
Abstract
time onward a frequency of use of the Latin terms increased, which testifies the growing
cultural assimilation of the incorporated territories to the Crown.
The citizens of the incorporated lands were aware that the Commonwealth was built up
of two parts
-
the Crown and the Great Duchy of Lithuania. And despite their dislike to the
repossession aspirations of the Lithuanians during the first interregna they did not forget
about their brothers from Lithuania in the following years. The Volhynian and Ukrainian
nobility sympathised with them when the conditions of the Lublin Union, ensuring the
autonomy of the Great Duchy, were being challenged. The citizens of the incorporated
territories also felt threatened by the centralizing actions of the Crown that infringed the
incorporation privileges.
The relations between the nobility of Volhynia and Ukraine and the citizens of neigh¬
bouring Red
Ruthenia
took on a different form. During the first two interregna the Volhy-
nians looked there for support, wanting to protect themselves with appropriate means
against Tartar raids and repossession aspirations of the Lithuanians. Later, the relationship
between both Rutnienias deteriorated. At the dietine of Wisznia the nobility of the incor¬
porated lands was not interested either in the banners of a common defence of the Ortho¬
dox rights or in the proposals of common actions against Tartar raids. It is possible that in
this way they wanted to stress their autonomy and demonstrate against the domination of
the envoys from
Ruthenian
province at the dietine.
Volhynian and Ukrainian diets often instructed their representatives to collaborate at
Sejm
sessions with the representatives of other Commonwealth provinces. An important
role in their resolutions was played by the so-called upper provinces . For a long time the
nobility of the incorporated lands took into account the opinions, both about foreign policy
and domestic matters, of the envoys taking upper seats at the
Sejm
sessions.
In general, the nobility of Volhynia and Ukraine treated the person and majesty of a king
with due homage and respect. We can point out to two periods, however, when the court
policy diminished the authority of the king. The first one was the period between the Union
of Lublin and
Sandomierz
rebellion, the second one between
1613
and
1618.
The nobility
of the incorporated territories perceived the person of a king in two aspects. On the one
hand they saw in him the supreme public power endowed by God, on the other they
emphasised the character of their relations with king, based on partnership, and they
reminded the king about their rights.
The citizens of Volhynia and Ukraine were attached to the institution of the
Sejm.
From
the incorporation to the Crown they were aware of its role and authority. At first, they were
of opinion that the main task of the
Sejm was
to impose taxes and undertake measures for
the protection of the state. From the Union of Lublin they began to pay attention to the fact
that the parliamentary estates also should heal the domestic injuries The nobility of the
incorporated lands recognised the authority of the
Sejm.
In the period from the Lublin Union to the Chmielnicki Uprising the nobility of the
incorporated provinces displayed a sense of unity and community of interests. Almost for
all this time they defended their rights passed in the incorporation privileges in
1569.
In
these territories the particularist tendencies existed for a long time but owing to the strong
integration with a political system and culture of the Crown they did not turn into open
separatist aspirations.

emphasised the character of their relations with king," based on partnership, and they
reminded the king about their rights.
From the Union of Lublin they began to pay attention to the fact
that the parliamentary estates also should heal the "domestic injuries" The nobility of the
incorporated lands recognised the authority of the
