MILUTIN MILANKOVIĆ AND THE MATICA SRPSKA
(Summary)
This book came about as an homage to this great scientist on the occasion of the
celebration of
125
years of his birth, and is being published as a contribution to the cele¬
bration of the International Year of Physics.
It has been written with the intent of presenting and commenting on, as authen¬
tically as possible, the documentation about
Milutin Milanković
(1879—1958)
heretofore
unused, especially those documents written by his own hand, kept in the Manuscript De¬
partment (the Archives) of the
Matica srpska
and the Archives of the Serbian Academy
of Arts and Science. At the same time, it was the author s intention to document in as
much detail as possible all the events in the working relationship between this great Ser¬
bian scientist and the oldest Serbian cultural and scientific association, the
Matica srpska,
founded in
1826.
The book contains three chapters composed primarily according to the chronology
of events, but also according to the specificities of the facts that are gathered in them and
commented upon. The first chapter is entitled The
Milanković
Family of Dalj and the
Matica srpska,
and is about the relationship
Milutin Milanković s
ancestors established
with the
Matica srpska;
this offers a perspective of how this respectable family contribu¬
ted to the process of the cultural development of the Serbian people. In his memoirs,
Mi¬
lanković
wrote prolifically of his family in the past with great piety, love and pride, and
with the facts in this book his wish is satisfied, that as much as possible is revealed about
them. The relationship of the
Milanković
family with the
Matica srpska
goes all the way
back to its earliest days, to the generation of Milutin s great-grandfather
Teodor
(1769—
1841);
he was the supervisor over the property of the Serbian Patriarchate in Dalj, a
subscriber to all the Serbian books that came out at the time, and was also one of those
who gathered subscriptions for the journal The Annals of the
Matica srpska
{Letopis Ma¬
tice
srpska).
Certain members of the
Milanković
family were also authors of contribu¬
tions to the publications of the
Matica srpska,
like Milutin s uncle David, and some were
benefactors of the
Matica
like Milutin s cousin, Milan
Milanković,
who established a

scholarship fund for an endowment within the
Matica
srpska.
From these facts, the rela¬
tionship that
Milutin Milanković
established with the
Matica srpska
seems only natural.
The second chapter is entitled The Writing of the Book Through Space and Time.
Milanković s
first documented direct contact with the
Matica srpska
occurred in
1925,
while he was writing this brilliant and popular book on astronomy with which he ente¬
red into the history of Serbian literature as well as science. Among the first who read the
beginning chapters of the book was Dr.
Marko
Maletín
(1890—1968),
the Secretary Ge¬
neral of the
Matica srpska
and the editor of the Annals of the
Matica srpska.
This perio¬
dical, in issue after issue between January,
1926
and January,
1928,
published the letters
of an astronomer , parts of the book to come. In this period, a constant flow of written
communication was exchanged between the author of the letters on astronomy and the
editor of the journal. In addition to the business, technical and editorial details, this cor¬
respondence also illustrates the beginning of a beautiful relationship between two intel¬
lectuals.
Maletín
ensured that
Milanković s
articles were well placed in an esthetic sense
by adding illustrative materials to them as well. These accompanying artistic elements
(with the exception of one graphic) were never reproduced again, so they have included
in this book.
Milanković s
correspondence, outlines and other manuscripts were written
by his own hand, so in this book there are facsimiles, accompanied by printed transcrip¬
tions, because
Milanković s
handwriting is hardly legible. Two years of the successive
monthly publishing of
Milanković s
letters in the journal of the
Matica srpska
was
crowned with a logical finale in the book which appeared in bookstores at the end of
1928
as an edition of the
Matica srpska s
publishing house. It would appear later, of
course, in the editions of other publishing houses as well, including a German edition,
but the fact remains that the
Matica srpska
was responsible for stimulating and pu¬
blishing the book, the best work of popularized science in the Serbian language. When
the book came out, the communication continued, some misunderstandings arose, but
Milanković
either smoothed them over or ignored them like a gentleman.
Independently of the preparations for the book, for the celebration of its
100
year
anniversary the
Matica srpska
elected
Milutin Milanković
as an honorary member, in the
company of other noteworthy people from abroad (for example T.G. Masarik, Seton
Watson, Gerhard Goeseman) and the national greats (N.
Tesla,
M. Pupin,
I.
Meštrović,
I.
Sekulić, U. Predić,
and so on).
Milanković
expressed his gratitude in a letter that was
only recently found in the archives of the
Matica srpska
still awaiting inventory. The
later correspondence of
Milanković
with the
Matica
was less important, but it is never¬
theless presented in this book. The period in this relationship up to the Second World
War was concluded by a serious article by the engineer
Slávko Bokšan,
The Conclusions
Brought about by
Milanković s
Theory, which was published in the highly circulated pu¬
blication The Almanac of the
Matica srpska
for the year
1941.
The third chapter of this book is entitled After the Second World War, as a matter
of mere chronology because in it is pieced together a mosaic of the various connections

had with the
Matica.
He was elected as a vice-president of the Serbian
Academy of Arts and Sciences in
1948,
and so
Milanković
had official contacts with the
Matica.
He represented the Academy at the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the
Matica srpska
in
1951,
and gave a short salutary speech at the event. In
1950,
Milanković
submitted the lengthy manuscript of the first book of his memoirs. The Academy ac¬
cepted it for publication, but was unable to carry out its plan. Thus, in
1953
Milanković
sent the manuscript to the
Matica srpska
where, upon the recommendation of
Mladen
Leskovac
(1902—1990)
it was positively accepted for publication, though the
Matica
then
failed to do so. Many documents have been preserved about these efforts at publication,
and they have been presented in this book. As a highly regarded scientist,
Milanković
asked of the
Matica
that he be allowed take part in the process of negotiating the com¬
mon literary language, because he felt strongly that this was a question of general import
for civilization and not just a question of linguistics.
Milanković
was one of the signers of
the historical document that was thought to have removed all disagreements among na¬
tions in Yugoslavia of that time who spoke the same language. When M.
Milanković
was
already seriously ill, at the end of
1957,
once again the
Matica srpska
asked him to
re-submit the manuscript of the first book of his memoirs. His wife, Hristina, sent the
manuscript, and it is preserved to this day in the Manuscript Department of the
Matica
srpska,
but it has never been printed by the
Matica.
The work came out, in an edition by
the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, but only posthumously.
The
Matica srpska
bid its final farewell to this honorary member in a death an¬
nouncement published in its journal for natural sciences, with special emphasis being
placed on his book Through Time and Space. Afterwards,
Milanković
has been written
about in the publications of the
Matica srpska
several times. An elucidation of the scien¬
tific versatility and philosophical components of his work was contributed in two articles
by
Andrija Stojković
in the Matica s journal for social sciences in
1979
and
1980.
For the
celebration of his 125th jubilee, an exhibition was presented about him, with artifacts
from the Library of the
Matica srpska.
The present book draws a close to the jubilee ho¬
mage of the
Matica srpska
to
Milutin Milanković,
attempting to show the creative rela¬
tionship that existed between this great man and this great institution.

Zusammenfassung
Dieses Buch ist als Hommage für den großen Wissenschaftler anläßlich des 125-jä¬
hrigen Jubiläums seines Geburtsjahres entstanden und es wird als Beitrag zur Feier des
Internationalen Jahres der Physik veröffentlicht.
Es ist mit der Absicht enstanden,
dass
die bisher nicht benutzte Dokumentation
über
Milutin Milanković
(1879—1958) so authentisch wie möglich präsentiert und kom¬
mentiert wird, besonders alles, was von seiner Hand geschrieben wurde und in der Ma¬
nuskriptabteilung (Archiv) der
Matica srpska,
bzw. dem Archiv der Serbischen Akademie
der Wissenschaften und Künste aufbewahrt wird. Gleichzeitig war der Vorsatz des Au¬
tors,
dass
er mit je mehr Details alles dokumentiert, was sich im Rahmen der Zusam¬
menarbeit zwischen dem großen serbischen Wissenschaftler und der
Matica srpska,
der
ältesten serbischen kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Assoziation — gegründet im Jahre
1826 —, abgespielt hat.
Das Buch hat drei Kapitel, hauptsächlich nach chronologischem Prinzip aufgebaut,
aber auch nach den Besonderheiten der in ihnen gesammelten und kommentierten Da¬
ten. Das erste Kapitel trägt den Titel Die Familie
Milanković
aus Dalj und die
Matica srp¬
ska
und es bezieht sich auf die Verbindungen zwischen den Vorfahren von
Milutin Mi¬
lanković
und der
Matica srpska,
was einen Beitrag darstellt,
dass
diese angesehene und
alte bürgerliche Familie auch innerhalb des geschichtlichen Prozesses der kulturellen
Entwicklung des serbischen Volkes betrachtet wird. In seinen Memoiren spricht
Milutin
Milanković
mit großer Pietät, viel Liebe und Stolz über seine Familie und die Vergangen¬
heit, und mit den neuen Daten in diesem Buch wird seinem Wunsch Genüge getan,
dass
man je mehr über die Mitglieder seiner Familie erfahrt. Die Beziehungen der Familie
Mi¬
lanković
zur
Matica srpska
gehen zurück bis in deren früheste Tage, und zwar bis zur
Generation von
Milanković s
Urgroßvater
Teodor
(1769—1841), welcher Aufseher auf
dem Besitz der Serbischen Patriarchie in Dalj war. Er war auf alle serbischen Bücher
abonniert, die zu dieser Zeit veröffentlicht wurden und er sammelte die Abonnement¬
gebühr für

Zeiten . Die erste erwiesene Begegnung von
Milutin Milanković
mit der
Matica srpska
geschah im Jahre 1925, zur Zeit, als er ein
brilhantes
populäres Buch über Astronomie
schrieb, dank welchem er nicht nur in die Geschichte der serbischen Wissenschaft son¬
dern auch der serbischen Literatur einging. Einer der ersten, der die ersten Teile seines
Buches las, war Dr. Marko
Maletín
(1890—1968), zu dieser Zeit Sekretär der
Matica srp¬
ska
und Redakteur von deren Zeitschrift
Letopis Matice
srpske.
Diese Zeitschrift veröf¬
fentlichte in jeder Nummer, von Januar 1926 bis Januar 1928, die Briefe eines Astrono¬
men , welche Teile des zukünftigen Buches waren. In diesem Zeitraum lief eine reger
Briefwechsel zwischen dem Autor der Astronomenbriefe und dem Redakteur der Zeit¬
schrift. Neben geschäftlichen, technischen und redaktionellen Details gibt dieser Brief¬
wechsel auch ein Bild von der Entstehung einer sehr schönen intelektuellen Freund¬
schaft.
Maletín
kümmerte sich darum,
dass
Milanković s
Artikel in ästhetischem Sinne
gut platziert werden und aus diesem Grunde fügte er ihnen Illustrationsmaterial hinzu.
Diese begleitenden künstlerischen Elemente wurden (außer einer Graphik) nie wieder re¬
produziert, was jedoch jetzt in dieser Publikation geschieht.
Milanković s
Korrespon¬
denz, Konzepte und andere Manuskripte wurden von seiner Hand geschrieben und die¬
ses Buch enthält Faksimiles, gefolgt von gedruckten Transkriptionen, denn
Milanković s
Handschrift ist nicht leicht zu lesen. Die zweijährige suksessive Veröffentlichung seiner
Briefe in der Zeitschrift der
Matica srpska
erhielt ihr logisches Finale in Form des Bu¬
ches, das Ende 1928 in den Buchhandlungen erschienen ist, als Veröffentlichung der
Ma¬
tica srpska.
Dieses wurde später auch seitens anderer Verlage herausgegeben, in deut¬
scher Sprache ebenfalls, aber es bleibt die Tatsache,
dass
die
Matica srpska
wegen der
Anregung und ihrem herausgeberischen Beitrag einen großen Verdienst für das Erschei¬
nen dieses Werkes hat, welches das beste die Wissenschaft
populariserende
Werk in ser¬
bischer Sprache ist. Die Kommunikation endete nicht mit der Veröffentlichung des Bu¬
ches, es kam sogar zu manchen Missverständnissen, aber dank seinem weltmännischen
Verhalten gelang es
Milanković,
diese zu beseitigen oder zu ignorieren.
Unabhängig von der Vorbereitung des Buches hat die
Matica srpska
anlässlich
ihres 100-jährigen Jubiläums
Milutin Milanković
zum Ehrenmitglied gewählt, in Ge¬
sellschaft von herausragenden Persönlichkeiten aus dem Ausland (T. G.
Masaryk,
R. W.
Seaton-
Watson,
Gerhard Gesemann) und nationalen Größen (N.
Tesla,
M. Pupin,
I.
Me-
štrović, I. Sekulić, U. Predić
usw.).
Milanković
hat sich mit einem Brief dafür bedankt
und dieser wurde erst jetzt im nicht inventarisierten Archivmaterial der
Matica srpsb
gefunden. Die spätere Korrespondenz zwischen
Milanković
und der
Matica
ist weniger
bedeutend, aber sie wird auch in diesem Buch vorgestellt. Der Zeitraum bis zum

Weltkrieg endet, was die gegenseitigen Beziehungen betrifft, mit dem ernsten Artikel von
Ing.
Slávko Bokšan
unter dem Titel Schlussfolgerungen, zu denen es dank
Milanović s
Theorie gekommen ist, erschienen 1941 in
Godišnjak Matice srpske
(Jahrbuch der
Matica
srpska),
einer Veröffentlichung der
Matica srpska
mit sehr hoher Auflage.
Das dritte Kapitel des Buches trägt den Titel Nach dem
II.
Weltkrieg rein chronolo¬
gisch, weil in ihm mosaikartig einzelne Beziehungen zwischen
Milanković
und der
Mati¬
ca
beschrieben werden. Im Jahre 1948 wurde
Milanković
zum Vizepräsidenten der Ser¬
bischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste gewählt und dann hatte er offizielle
Kontakte mit der
Matica.
Er war der Vertreter der Akademie bei der Feier des 125-jähri¬
gen Jubiläums der
Matica srpska
im Jahre 1951 und bei dieser Gelegenheit hielt er eine
kurze Rede. 1950 übergab
Milanković
der Akademie das umfangreiche Manuskript für
das erste Buch seiner Memoiren. Die Akademie nahm dieses Werk an, um es zu ver¬
öffentlichen, aber sie war letztendlich doch nicht bereit, ihre Entscheidung zu verwirk¬
lichen. Darum schickte
Milanković
1953 das Manuskript an die
Matica srpska,
die sich
— auf Empfehlung von
Mladen
Leskovac (1902—1990) — positiv zum Druck des Buches
äußerte, aber auch dann kam es nicht zur Veröffentlichung. Über diesen Versuch gibt es
viele bewahrte Dokumente und sie werden in diesem Buch dargestellt. Die
Matica
hat
Milanković,
als einen sehr herausragenden Wissenschaftler, gebeten, an den Gesprächen
über die gemeinsame Literatursprache teilzunehmen, wodurch betont wurde,
dass
dies
eine allgemein zivilisatorische und nicht nur eine fachspezifische Frage ist.
Milanković
ist
einer der Unterzeichner dieses historischen Dokuments, von dem man glaubte,
dass
es
Unstimmigkeiten zwischen den Völkern des damaligen Jugoslawien, welche die gleiche
Sprache gesprochen haben, beseitigen wird. Ende 1957, zur Zeit, als M.
Milanković
schon
ernsthaft krank war, hat ihn die
Matica
gebeten, das Manuskript für das erste Buch sei¬
ner Memoiren erneut zuzuschicken. Seine Ehefrau Hristina hat das getan — die Hand¬
schrift wird heute noch in der Manuskriptabteilung der
Matica srpska
aufbewahrt —,
aber das Werk wurde auch dann nicht veröffentlicht. Es erschien erst postum, als Aus¬
gabe der Serbischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste.
Die
Matica srpska
hat sich mit einem Nekrolog in ihrer Zeitschrift für Natur¬
wissenschaften von ihrem Ehrenmitglied verabschiedet, und dort wird vor allem das
Buch Durch ferne Welten und Zeiten betont. In der darauf folgenden Zeit wurde in den
Publikationen der
Matica srpska
mehrmals über
Milanković
geschrieben. Zur Explizie¬
rung seiner außerordentlichen wissenschaftlichen Vielseitigkeit und seiner philosophi¬
schen Komponente haben in bedeutendem Maße zwei Artikel von
Andrija Stojković
in
Maticas Zeitschrift für Geisteswissenschaften in den Jahren 1979 und 1980 beigetragen.
Zur Feier seines 125-jährigen Jubiläums wurde eine Austeilung über ihn organisiert, mit
Exponaten aus der Bibliothek der
Matica srpska.
Dieses Buch schließt die Jubiläumshom¬
mage der
Matica srpska
für Müutin
Milanković,
indem der Versuch gemacht wird, die
schaffenden Beziehungen zwischen zwei herausragenden Gipfeln in der serbischen zivili¬
satorischen Entwicklung darzustellen.

From these facts, the rela¬
tionship that
Milutin Milanković
established with the
Matica srpska
seems only natural.
The second chapter is entitled The Writing of the Book 'Through Space and Time.
Milanković's
first documented direct contact with the
Matica srpska
occurred in
1925,
while he was writing this brilliant and popular book on astronomy with which he ente¬
red into the history of Serbian literature as well as science. Among the first who read the
beginning chapters of the book was Dr.
Marko
Maletín
(1890—1968),
the Secretary Ge¬
neral of the
Matica srpska
and the editor of the Annals of the
Matica srpska.
This perio¬
dical, in issue after issue between January,
1926
and January,
1928,
published "the letters
of an astronomer", parts of the book to come. In this period, a constant flow of written
communication was exchanged between the author of the letters on astronomy and the
editor of the journal. In addition to the business, technical and editorial details, this cor¬
respondence also illustrates the beginning of a beautiful relationship between two intel¬
lectuals.
Maletín
ensured that
Milanković's
articles were well placed in an esthetic sense
by adding illustrative materials to them as well. These accompanying artistic elements
(with the exception of one graphic) were never reproduced again, so they have included
in this book.
Milanković's
correspondence, outlines and other manuscripts were written
by his own hand, so in this book there are facsimiles, accompanied by printed transcrip¬
tions, because
Milanković's
handwriting is hardly legible. Two years of the successive
monthly publishing of
Milanković's
letters in the journal of the
Matica srpska
was
crowned with a logical finale in the book which appeared in bookstores at the end of
1928
as an edition of the
Matica srpska's
publishing house. It would appear later, of
course, in the editions of other publishing houses as well, including a German edition,
but the fact remains that the
Matica srpska
was responsible for stimulating and pu¬
blishing the book, the best work of popularized science in the Serbian language. When
the book came out, the communication continued, some misunderstandings arose, but
Milanković
either smoothed them over or ignored them like a gentleman.
Independently of the preparations for the book, for the celebration of its
100
year
anniversary the
Matica srpska
elected
Milutin Milanković
as an honorary member, in the
company of other noteworthy people from abroad (for example T.G. Masarik, Seton
Watson, Gerhard Goeseman) and the national greats (N.
Tesla,
M. Pupin,
I.
Meštrović,
I.
Sekulić, U. Predić,
and so on).
Milanković
expressed his gratitude in a letter that was
only recently found in the archives of the
Matica srpska
still awaiting inventory. The
later correspondence of
Milanković
with the
Matica
was less important, but it is never¬
theless presented in this book. The period in this relationship up to the Second World
War was concluded by a serious article by the engineer
Slávko Bokšan,
The Conclusions
Brought about by
Milanković's
Theory, which was published in the highly circulated pu¬
blication The Almanac of the
Matica srpska
for the year
1941.
The third chapter of this book is entitled After the Second World War, as a matter
of mere chronology because in it is pieced together a mosaic of the various connections

Matica.
He was elected as a vice-president of the Serbian
Academy of Arts and Sciences in
1948,
and so
Milanković
had official contacts with the
Matica.
He represented the Academy at the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the
Matica srpska
in
1951,
and gave a short salutary speech at the event. In
1950,
Milanković
submitted the lengthy manuscript of the first book of his memoirs. The Academy ac¬
cepted it for publication, but was unable to carry out its plan. Thus, in
1953
Milanković
sent the manuscript to the
Matica srpska
where, upon the recommendation of
Mladen
Leskovac
(1902—1990)
it was positively accepted for publication, though the
Matica
then
failed to do so. Many documents have been preserved about these efforts at publication,
and they have been presented in this book. As a highly regarded scientist,
Milanković
asked of the
Matica
that he be allowed take part in the process of negotiating the com¬
mon literary language, because he felt strongly that this was a question of general import
for civilization and not just a question of linguistics.
Milanković
was one of the signers of
the historical document that was thought to have removed all disagreements among na¬
tions in Yugoslavia of that time who spoke the same language. When M.
Milanković
was
already seriously ill, at the end of
1957,
once again the
Matica srpska
asked him to
re-submit the manuscript of the first book of his memoirs. His wife, Hristina, sent the
manuscript, and it is preserved to this day in the Manuscript Department of the
Matica
srpska,
but it has never been printed by the
Matica.
The work came out, in an edition by
the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, but only posthumously.
The
Matica srpska
bid its final farewell to this honorary member in a death an¬
nouncement published in its journal for natural sciences, with special emphasis being
placed on his book Through Time and Space. Afterwards,
Milanković
has been written
about in the publications of the
Matica srpska
several times. An elucidation of the scien¬
tific versatility and philosophical components of his work was contributed in two articles
by
Andrija Stojković
in the Matica's journal for social sciences in
1979
and
1980.
For the
celebration of his 125th jubilee, an exhibition was presented about him, with artifacts
from the Library of the
Matica srpska.
The present book draws a close to the jubilee ho¬
mage of the
Matica srpska
to
Milutin Milanković,
attempting to show the creative rela¬
tionship that existed between this great man and this great institution.

Zusammenfassung
Dieses Buch ist als Hommage für den großen Wissenschaftler anläßlich des 125-jä¬
hrigen Jubiläums seines Geburtsjahres entstanden und es wird als Beitrag zur Feier des
Internationalen Jahres der Physik veröffentlicht.
Es ist mit der Absicht enstanden,
dass
die bisher nicht benutzte Dokumentation
über
Milutin Milanković
(1879—1958) so authentisch wie möglich präsentiert und kom¬
mentiert wird, besonders alles, was von seiner Hand geschrieben wurde und in der Ma¬
nuskriptabteilung (Archiv) der
Matica srpska,
bzw. dem Archiv der Serbischen Akademie
der Wissenschaften und Künste aufbewahrt wird. Gleichzeitig war der Vorsatz des Au¬
tors,
dass
er mit je mehr Details alles dokumentiert, was sich im Rahmen der Zusam¬
menarbeit zwischen dem großen serbischen Wissenschaftler und der
Matica srpska,
der
ältesten serbischen kulturellen und wissenschaftlichen Assoziation — gegründet im Jahre
1826 —, abgespielt hat.
Das Buch hat drei Kapitel, hauptsächlich nach chronologischem Prinzip aufgebaut,
aber auch nach den Besonderheiten der in ihnen gesammelten und kommentierten Da¬
ten. Das erste Kapitel trägt den Titel Die Familie
Milanković
aus Dalj und die
Matica srp¬
ska
und es bezieht sich auf die Verbindungen zwischen den Vorfahren von
Milutin Mi¬
lanković
und der
Matica srpska,
was einen Beitrag darstellt,
dass
diese angesehene und
alte bürgerliche Familie auch innerhalb des geschichtlichen Prozesses der kulturellen
Entwicklung des serbischen Volkes betrachtet wird. In seinen Memoiren spricht
Milutin
Milanković
mit großer Pietät, viel Liebe und Stolz über seine Familie und die Vergangen¬
heit, und mit den neuen Daten in diesem Buch wird seinem Wunsch Genüge getan,
dass
man je mehr über die Mitglieder seiner Familie erfahrt. Die Beziehungen der Familie
Mi¬
lanković
zur
Matica srpska
gehen zurück bis in deren früheste Tage, und zwar bis zur
Generation von
Milanković's
Urgroßvater
Teodor
(1769—1841), welcher Aufseher auf
dem Besitz der Serbischen Patriarchie in Dalj war. Er war auf alle serbischen Bücher
abonniert, die zu dieser Zeit veröffentlicht wurden und er sammelte die Abonnement¬
gebühr für
Letopis Matice
srpske
(Annalen der
Matica srpska)
ein. Einige Mitglieder der
Familie
Milanković
waren Autoren von Beiträgen in den Veröffentlichungen der
Matica

srpska,
wie z.
В.
Milutins
Onkel
David,
und Wohltäter der
Matica srpska,
wie
Miloš Mi-
lanković,
Cousin von Milutins Vater, der einen Fonds für eine Stipendienstiftung inner¬
halb der
Matica srpska
gründete. Auf Grund dieser Tatsachen geht die Beziehung von
Milutin Milanković
zur
Matica srpska
als eine ganz natürliche Folge hervor.
Das zweite Kapitel trägt den Titel Entstehung des Buches "Durch ferne Welten und
Zeiten". Die erste erwiesene Begegnung von
Milutin Milanković
mit der
Matica srpska
geschah im Jahre 1925, zur Zeit, als er ein
brilhantes
populäres Buch über Astronomie
schrieb, dank welchem er nicht nur in die Geschichte der serbischen Wissenschaft son¬
dern auch der serbischen Literatur einging. Einer der ersten, der die ersten Teile seines
Buches las, war Dr. Marko
Maletín
(1890—1968), zu dieser Zeit Sekretär der
Matica srp¬
ska
und Redakteur von deren Zeitschrift
Letopis Matice
srpske.
Diese Zeitschrift veröf¬
fentlichte in jeder Nummer, von Januar 1926 bis Januar 1928, die "Briefe eines Astrono¬
men", welche Teile des zukünftigen Buches waren. In diesem Zeitraum lief eine reger
Briefwechsel zwischen dem Autor der Astronomenbriefe und dem Redakteur der Zeit¬
schrift. Neben geschäftlichen, technischen und redaktionellen Details gibt dieser Brief¬
wechsel auch ein Bild von der Entstehung einer sehr schönen intelektuellen Freund¬
schaft.
Maletín
kümmerte sich darum,
dass
Milanković's
Artikel in ästhetischem Sinne
gut platziert werden und aus diesem Grunde fügte er ihnen Illustrationsmaterial hinzu.
Diese begleitenden künstlerischen Elemente wurden (außer einer Graphik) nie wieder re¬
produziert, was jedoch jetzt in dieser Publikation geschieht.
Milanković's
Korrespon¬
denz, Konzepte und andere Manuskripte wurden von seiner Hand geschrieben und die¬
ses Buch enthält Faksimiles, gefolgt von gedruckten Transkriptionen, denn
Milanković's
Handschrift ist nicht leicht zu lesen. Die zweijährige suksessive Veröffentlichung seiner
Briefe in der Zeitschrift der
Matica srpska
erhielt ihr logisches Finale in Form des Bu¬
ches, das Ende 1928 in den Buchhandlungen erschienen ist, als Veröffentlichung der
Ma¬
tica srpska.
Dieses wurde später auch seitens anderer Verlage herausgegeben, in deut¬
scher Sprache ebenfalls, aber es bleibt die Tatsache,
dass
die
Matica srpska
wegen der
Anregung und ihrem herausgeberischen Beitrag einen großen Verdienst für das Erschei¬
nen dieses Werkes hat, welches das beste die Wissenschaft
populariserende
Werk in ser¬
bischer Sprache ist. Die Kommunikation endete nicht mit der Veröffentlichung des Bu¬
ches, es kam sogar zu manchen Missverständnissen, aber dank seinem weltmännischen
Verhalten gelang es
Milanković,
diese zu beseitigen oder zu ignorieren.
Unabhängig von der Vorbereitung des Buches hat die
Matica srpska
anlässlich
ihres 100-jährigen Jubiläums
Milutin Milanković
zum Ehrenmitglied gewählt, in Ge¬
sellschaft von herausragenden Persönlichkeiten aus dem Ausland (T. G.
Masaryk,
R. W.
Seaton-
Watson,
Gerhard Gesemann) und nationalen Größen (N.
Tesla,
M. Pupin,
I.
Me-
štrović, I. Sekulić, U. Predić
usw.).
Milanković
hat sich mit einem Brief dafür bedankt
und dieser wurde erst jetzt im nicht inventarisierten Archivmaterial der
Matica srpsb
gefunden. Die spätere Korrespondenz zwischen
Milanković
und der
Matica
ist weniger
bedeutend, aber sie wird auch in diesem Buch vorgestellt. Der Zeitraum bis zum

Weltkrieg endet, was die gegenseitigen Beziehungen betrifft, mit dem ernsten Artikel von
Ing.
Slávko Bokšan
unter dem Titel Schlussfolgerungen, zu denen es dank
Milanović's
Theorie gekommen ist, erschienen 1941 in
Godišnjak Matice srpske
(Jahrbuch der
Matica
srpska),
einer Veröffentlichung der
Matica srpska
mit sehr hoher Auflage.
Das dritte Kapitel des Buches trägt den Titel Nach dem
II.
Weltkrieg rein chronolo¬
gisch, weil in ihm mosaikartig einzelne Beziehungen zwischen
Milanković
und der
Mati¬
ca
beschrieben werden. Im Jahre 1948 wurde
Milanković
zum Vizepräsidenten der Ser¬
bischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste gewählt und dann hatte er offizielle
Kontakte mit der
Matica.
Er war der Vertreter der Akademie bei der Feier des 125-jähri¬
gen Jubiläums der
Matica srpska
im Jahre 1951 und bei dieser Gelegenheit hielt er eine
kurze Rede. 1950 übergab
Milanković
der Akademie das umfangreiche Manuskript für
das erste Buch seiner Memoiren. Die Akademie nahm dieses Werk an, um es zu ver¬
öffentlichen, aber sie war letztendlich doch nicht bereit, ihre Entscheidung zu verwirk¬
lichen. Darum schickte
Milanković
1953 das Manuskript an die
Matica srpska,
die sich
— auf Empfehlung von
Mladen
Leskovac (1902—1990) — positiv zum Druck des Buches
äußerte, aber auch dann kam es nicht zur Veröffentlichung. Über diesen Versuch gibt es
viele bewahrte Dokumente und sie werden in diesem Buch dargestellt. Die
Matica
hat
Milanković,
als einen sehr herausragenden Wissenschaftler, gebeten, an den Gesprächen
über die gemeinsame Literatursprache teilzunehmen, wodurch betont wurde,
dass
dies
eine allgemein zivilisatorische und nicht nur eine fachspezifische Frage ist.
Milanković
ist
einer der Unterzeichner dieses historischen Dokuments, von dem man glaubte,
dass
es
Unstimmigkeiten zwischen den Völkern des damaligen Jugoslawien, welche die gleiche
Sprache gesprochen haben, beseitigen wird. Ende 1957, zur Zeit, als M.
Milanković
schon
ernsthaft krank war, hat ihn die
Matica
gebeten, das Manuskript für das erste Buch sei¬
ner Memoiren erneut zuzuschicken. Seine Ehefrau Hristina hat das getan — die Hand¬
schrift wird heute noch in der Manuskriptabteilung der
Matica srpska
aufbewahrt —,
aber das Werk wurde auch dann nicht veröffentlicht. Es erschien erst postum, als Aus¬
gabe der Serbischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und Künste.
Die
Matica srpska
hat sich mit einem Nekrolog in ihrer Zeitschrift für Natur¬
wissenschaften von ihrem Ehrenmitglied verabschiedet, und dort wird vor allem das
Buch Durch ferne Welten und Zeiten betont. In der darauf folgenden Zeit wurde in den
Publikationen der
Matica srpska
mehrmals über
Milanković
geschrieben. Zur Explizie¬
rung seiner außerordentlichen wissenschaftlichen Vielseitigkeit und seiner philosophi¬
schen Komponente haben in bedeutendem Maße zwei Artikel von
Andrija Stojković
in
Maticas Zeitschrift für Geisteswissenschaften in den Jahren 1979 und 1980 beigetragen.
Zur Feier seines 125-jährigen Jubiläums wurde eine Austeilung über ihn organisiert, mit
Exponaten aus der Bibliothek der
Matica srpska.
Dieses Buch schließt die Jubiläumshom¬
mage der
Matica srpska
für Müutin
Milanković,
indem der Versuch gemacht wird, die
schaffenden Beziehungen zwischen zwei herausragenden Gipfeln in der serbischen zivili¬
satorischen Entwicklung darzustellen.
