This book provides a comprehensive account of the religious life of ancient
Athens, a religious life illuminated by a myriad of sources and probably more
variously accessible to us than that of any other polytheistic city of the ancient
world.The city s many festivals are discussed in detail, with attention to recent
anthropological theory; so too, for instance, are the cults or households and
of smaller groups, the role of religious practice and argumentation in public life,
the authority of priests, the activities of religious professionals such as seers and
priestesses, magic, and the place

theatrical representations of the gods within
public attitudes to the divine. Archaeological and epigraphical discoveries allow
the cults to be located in a landscape: the religious world of the Attic denies
is investigated, as are the relations of the Athenians with great religious centres
outside their own territory such as Delphi and
Delos.
