The monograph deals with marital migration in the 20th century by studying
the cases of Dalmatian brides who moved from the hinterland of the Croatian town
of
Zadar
to the Brkini Hills in Slovenia in order to live with their husbands-to-be.
Initially, the two areas were connected only through economic activities (the sale
and trade in various produce and commodities), and later on also through marital
ties. First marriages were arranged among the population of both areas by trade
merchants,
i.e.,
Dalmatian men who used to undertake seasonal work in the Brkini
and the hinterland of
Ilirska Bistrica.
They were soon joined by women who had
moved to the Brkini. Interestingly, women used to arrange marriages only with
their women relatives or with women from their or surrounding villages, while
the trade merchants sphere of marital matchmaking covered much larger areas on
both sides. The marital ties between the Brkini and
Dalmaţia
can be perceived as
a marital practice developed in order to assure the continuity of life in the Brkini
region. Owing to the fact that it was only women who moved from
Dalmaţia
to Slovenia, such type of migration can be classified under the one-way marital
migration. The arranged marriage was usually chosen by first-born sons or by the
only unmarried male descendants who were to inherit fairly large farms. In view
of the scarcity of women in their area and their role in the family, they were ready
to look for their brides beyond their traditional marital area. Dalmatian women
usually married with Slovenes as they hoped to lead a better life.
For both areas, the marriages between Dalmatian girls and Brkini boys present¬
ed a new, additional marital strategy that widened the scope of marital selection on
both sides. Thus in the case of Dalmatian-Brkini marriages, the endogamous prin¬
ciples stipulating marriages within a limited geographical area and within strict
ethnic and religious boundaries were not observed. They were replaced by marital
practices that established ties between two geographically separated environments

with different languages, religion, customs and habits. The marital ties between
the Brkini and
Dalmaţia
can also be perceived as a violation of the general marital
principles and rules and, consequently, as a deviation from the established and ac¬
cepted marital practices, which caused that the Brkini people (and their relatives)
developed ambiguous attitudes towards such marriages. On the one hand, they
regarded the marriage with a Dalmatian woman as the only way to solve the farm
and assure its continuity; on the other, they perceived it as a stain on one s honour
due to the fact that the bride was a foreigner and not a local girl. In any case, the
imperative to provide for the descendants and thus assure the continuity of farm
life blurred the traditional marital strategies and practices and replaced them with
new ones that were possible under the given circumstances.
