SUMMARY
This book is a monograph on a great pedagogical genius,
Jan Amos Ko¬
menský,
and the considerable impacts he has had on Croatian education and
teaching, on Croatian pedagogy and pedagogists. Its publication is closely
related to 415th anniversary of his birth and 350th anniversary of the publica¬
tion of his complete works, Opera
Didactica
Omnia.
It has been jointly pub¬
lished by the Croatian-Slovak Friendship Society, Croatian-Czech Society
and the
Boskovic
publishing house from Split, and it is dedicated not only
to the memory of this pedagogical genius, but also to all Czech and Slovak
friends
-
the builders of Croatian-Slovak and Croatian-Czech friendship and
co-operation.
The book is composed of three main parts. In the first part, The Life and
Work of a Pedagogical Genius, the author studies the life, the exemplary
personality and the amazing work of/.
A. Komenský
in
8
points of reference.
In the first one the author reviews his painstaking life, which was the life of
a sufferer and religious refugee who could not return to his homeland to the
end of his life. The second one describes his humaneness, democraticism and
patriotism. The third presents
Komenský
as the first and the greatest of all ed¬
ucational reformists, as the educator who had set the organization of class-
based and subject-based teaching system, and the concept of the school year,
school week, day and period, which are still the basic organizational forms
of present-day school organization. In the fourth one
Komenský
is shown not
only as a great reformist, but as the founder of the modern pedagogical sci¬
ence. The fifth point of reference is dedicated to his pansophic world-view,
and the sixth one deals with further development of his pansophic approach.
In the seventh,
Komenský
is shown as an ingenious visionary who had set the
leading educational principles and permanent educational values. The eighth
point of reference deals with the magnificent celebrations of 400th anniver¬
sary of his birth in Prague,
Uhersky Brod
and Bratislava in
1992.
This is what can be concluded:
J. A. Komenský
was a great thinker, writ¬
er, philosopher, pedagogist, scientist, linguist, humanist, democrat, patriot,
115
reformist,
and the advocate of peace among people and nations. He is one of
the greatest pedagogical minds in history, the most distinguished among the
classics of science of education, the leading initiator of educational reforms,
the most influential figure among the pedagogists of the modern age, and,
particularly from the perspective of the time he lived in, the creator of the
magnificent pedagogical system and the founder of the modern pedagogical
science. There is no doubt that the personality and work of J.
A. Komenský
are one of the most valuable contributions of the Czech people to the world,
as it has enriched the world science, education and culture.
The second part,
Komenský
and the Croats, deals with his influence on
Croatian education, pedagogy and pedagogists, which the author describes
in
5
points of reference. According to the author, these influences were no¬
ticeable in the very first encounters between Croatian and Czech teachers
while studying in Prague, and later in the co-operation of their teachers'
movements, which were inspired and led by
Komenský
's pedagogical, hu¬
manistic, democratic and patriotic ideas. Following his teaching on a demo¬
cratic popular school, on its interrelation with life, on the importance of the
real knowledge instead of the formal one, and on the necessity of teaching in
mother tongue, Croatian teachers have accepted and follow his pedagogical
realism; they oppose any verbalism and formalism in students' knowledge,
fight for affirmation and recognition of teachers and for their academic edu¬
cation, as well as for obligatory 8-year popular school.
The influence he had on our teachers is additionally noticeable in the
activities of the main pedagogical association in Croatia
-
the Croatian
Pedagogical-Literary Association. This pedagogical association was estab¬
lished in
1871,
when it published The Didactic by J.
A. Komenský.
Later, it
published his instruction manual on pre-school upbringing,
Informatory
za
školu materinsku
(1886),
and The Great Didactic
(1900).
The Croatian Ped¬
agogical-Literary Association has published numerous studies on
Komen¬
ský,
organized celebrations of his anniversaries, exhibitions, lectures and so
on. Throughout
136
years of its existence and its educational, pedagogical
and cultural activity, the Croatian Pedagogical-Literary Association has con¬
tinuously been inspired by
Komenský 's
ideas, and they have been spreading
116
his teaching and encouraging the development of pedagogical theory and
educational practice which were in harmony with visionary ideas of that
pedagogical genius ever since.
We should conclude with the following: J.
A. Komenský
has deeply in¬
fluenced Croatian education, pedagogical concept and the entire educational
and cultural life of Croatia, especially in 19th and 20th century. Even though
he personally never was in Croatia, his spirit and his personality, his work
and his pedagogical teaching, which have always been present in Croatian
education, teaching and pedagogical thought, are still encouraging and there
are numerous followers and continuators of his work among Croatian peda-
gogists.
In the third and final part:
Komenský
and the third millennium there are
only two points of reference: a review of the international scientific confer¬
ence of experts on
Komenský:
"De
rerum humanorum emendatione con-
sulatatio catholica {General consultation on the reformation of human mat¬
ters) and the importance of
Jan Amos Komenský
for the third millennium",
which was held in Bratislava in 20OO, and the dissertation "Educational val¬
ues and guidelines for the third millennium", which was presented by the
author of this monograph in the form of a report. The basic ideas presented
are the following:
Scientific and technological advances do not guarantee a better world.
The twentieth century was the era of great scientific victories, as well as of
crushing defeats as far as the achievement of morality is concerned. Scien-
tistic partiality, utilitarian and hedonistic concept of life, with all the tragic
consequences of a morally ill society, have put the accent on humaneness as
the basic and most important question in life.
What humanity needs is the comeback to ethics, to universal human
values and education as a factor of building a personality and improving
the
future.
The author highlights the abundance of stimuli for all that in the
magnificent project, "General consultation on the reformation of human
matters," written by
/.
A. Komenský,
which is directed towards the future.
The author has highlighted the following: "Teleological approach,
axiological approach, the unity of the cognitive and value-related compo-
117
nents of life, integral upbringing in the function of humanization and its
implementation in the general improvement of the future. These are the per¬
manent values and guidelines of the general "improvement of human mat¬
ters" in 21st century and in the third millennium.
