The British at War is Hie first comprehensive
history of the role, nature and organisation
of film propaganda in Britain during the
Second World War. It presents a full picture
of a popular consensus being formed
between government and film industry over the representation of the British at
war on the cinema screen.
James Chapman shows how official film propaganda policy was more successful
than
ite
critics have alleged. He draws on a wide range of government and trade
sources to explore the relationship between the Ministry of Information and the
different sectors of the film industry, and discusses the role of the cinema as a
vehicle of propaganda set firmly within the politics and
cultore
of a nation at war.
Chapman identifies the themes and images presented to the British public by
analysing key propaganda films, including
4Ψ·
Parallel, The
Ufe
and Death of
Colonel Blimp, Fires Were Started, Millions like Us and Henry V. He explores the
competing demands of propaganda and entertainment value and discusses the
roles of both the commercial film industry and the various film units under
government control. He also corrects previous misunderstandings of the place
in official propaganda of short films and documentaries.
The British at War is an important, scholarly and well-written book, which
deserves to be given currency in debates about the cultural capital and controls
of the Second World War.
