tells the
story
of the
struggle
orblack
performers working toward
artistic freedom while coping with the scars of
slavery and segregation.
The obstacles they faced-racial discrimina¬
tion, lack of education, demeaning stereotypes-
arc laid bare. Black theater as we know it today
is the culmination of decades of persistence and
risk.
James Haskins surveys drama, comedy, and
music from the earliest black performers and
playwrights, such as Ira Aldridgc and William
Wells Brown, through W.
E. B.
DuBois,
Ntozake Shangc, and the Negro Ensemble
Company. The contributions of Paul Robeson,
Ethel Waters, Sidney Poitier, and many others
show the cultural evolution of black artists
during turbulent times in America.
