Summary

Summary
In the
XVII
century the house of
Moszyńscy
belonged to moderately wealthy no¬
bility. The progenitor of the house was
Paweł
(d.
1593),
a captain of horse, who parti¬
cipated in the Russian wars of king Stefan
Batory
The first widely known representati¬
ve of the house of
Moszyńscy
was
Jędrzej
(d.
1685),
a podstarości spiski
(a deputy sub-
perfect of
Spisz),
who became well-known because he introduced severe military regi¬
me and religious oppression in Polish
Spisz.
However, it was
Jan Kanty
Moszynski s
brilliant career that made the house achieve considerable success.
Jan Kanty Moszyń-
ski
(1696-1737),
a Jedrzej s grandson, got married to a count s daughter Cosel in
1730,
the lady being a natural daughter of king August II the Strong. Thanks to this marriage
Moszyński
entered the circles of the nobility and was given a title of a count. There were
two sons born of this marriage: August and
Fryderyk.
The elder, August
(1731-1786),
was an art advisor of king
Stanisław
August Poniatowski. He merited the gratitude as
a promotor
of the king s collection of drawings, which is now preserved in a residual
form in the collection of the Warsaw University Library. The younger of the brothers,
Fryderyk
(1738-1817),
was born in Dresden as a posthumous child. He became famo¬
us for being an exceptional financier and a president of the
grodzieński
seym in
1793.
He gathered enormous fortune which is estimated at
15
million Polish
Zloty.
Since he
was childless, he demised his huge fortune to his distant relative from the collateral,
łoniowska
line of the house
-
Ignacy
Hilary
Moszyński
(1763-1827)
and to
Ignacy
s son
-
Piotr
(1800-1879).
At the same time lie suggested that they should get married to
Fryderyka
and Joanna, two granddaughters of his brother August. Thus the fortune became the property
of
Piotr Moszyński
whose life, however, was marked with suffering. After he got enga¬
ged in struggle for independence after the fall of the Decembrists Uprising in Russia,
he was arrested and sent to a long-term exile in Siberia. After having returned from the
exile,
Piotr Moszyński
spent the rest of his life in Krakow, where he got engaged into
philanthropic, educational and cultural activity of the city.
Piotr
Moszynski s son,
Jerzy
(1847-1924),
being quarrelled with
Stańczycy,
com¬
pletely sacrificed himself to fight parties struggling for independence, accusing them of
the desire to cause biological extermination of the Polish nation via disastrous uprisings.
He believed the only sensible development of the Polish nation could be realized via loyalism
towards the invaders and loyalty to the Catholic Church.
Jerzy
s conciliatory attitude did
not, however, mean total submission to the invaders but still it manifested itself against
the insurgent attempts. He held the belief that the authority of the invading countries should
be accepted in politics, but not in culture and religion. He did not agree to
russification
and germanization of education and to conversion into the Orthodox Church or the Evangelic
Church. He claimed the only way was „work at the foundation , the claim similar to that
of well-known
positivists,
together with cultivating ancestors traditions in the hope that
rebirth and a proper moment of liberation, bound to come in indefinite time, would come.
His father s exile together with the death of his brother
Emanuel
in January Uprising influenced
his activity. His voluminous output, frequently monotonous and dull, was in fact a refe¬
rence to the idea of advocates of conciliation in the Congress Kingdom of Poland. His
children and grandchildren played no important role in the history of Poland.
This monograph is a chronological, collective bibliography of the members of the
house. The objective of this work is to present, by means of the analytical method, the
history of
łoniowska
(castellan) branch of the house of
Moszyńscy
and to bring into particular
importance the figure of
Piotr Moszyński
and his son
Jerzy
in the light of the so far unknown
sources
-
in particular the private archives of the house of
Moszyńscy,
which are in po¬
ssession of
Karol Rostworowski.
These archives have been arranged and catalogued by
the author of this dissertation. They cast new light on the history of Polish landed ari¬
stocracy during the time of partitions. The history of this family is treated by the author
as a study of a specific case which illustrates the dusk of an enormous lordly fortune in
the
XVIII
century. The fortune which in the following century, due to national enslave¬
ment, lost its political significance and financial status.
Moszynscy s greatest contribution to Poland is the magnificent cultural legacy they
left. First of all, their collections of engravings, military accessories and books still en¬
thral the collectors and make a perfect workshop for historians of art, librarians and ar¬
tists. The fact that
Moszyńscy
were founders, donors and patrons also deserves much
appreciation. Their foundation had great significance for the birth and development of
University Library of Catholic University of Lublin, which was awarded with a collec¬
tion of books
Moszyńscy
had been collecting for two hundred years. Had it not been
for this family, the collection of drawings would not have enriched Polish Academy of
Arts and Sciences with a, respected in Poland, collection of engravings inferior only to
the Warsaw collection of
Stanisław
August. National Museum in Krakow also enriched
its collection with a valuable collection of military accessories consisting of Polish and
foreign armourer s products. More meritorious for the Polish culture were only such houses
as
Czartoryscy, Załuscy, Krasińscy, Baworowscy, Ossolińscy, Dzieduszyccy, Potoccy
and Działyńscy.
