Annotation
In
the book "In crossfire" (Latvian warfare skill
1940-1945),
the con¬
clusions on the events of the last world war are examined, analysed and
drawn. The book reviews the events on the Latvian soil and the dramatic
destinies of the Latvian nation and soldiers mainly from the military point
of view.
With the support of several distinctive Latvian soldiers and histo¬
rians, the author has managed to look at Latvian destinies from the per¬
spective of the war, the art of warfare and battlefield rules. It is a partial
answer to an important question
-
why and in whose interest the dramatic
events and the reasons that caused the attempt of Germanization and
Russification
in Latvia are hold back until this day. The main war events
their causes and effects are examined in eleven chapters of the book.
In the first chapter of the research, an answer can be found to a
question
-
why those events whose main impetus was the struggle of major
states for an absolute power on the European continent in pre-war years
are hidden until this day. It has been studied out why these questions had
not been analysed and evaluated. It was kept silent that, in the battle¬
fields, the result was determined not only by the size and armament of
the armed forces, but also by a correct force alignment, its management,
preparedness and the warfare skill.
Analysing the accordance of the state defence plan to the modern
war conditions and its ability to accomplish the task, there is an answer
found to the question: what Latvians wanted or did not want, could and
could not, did and did not.
The initial period of the war, its course on the Latvian soil, as well
as the events of the Year of Horror and nation's revolt against the oppres¬
sors are examined on the ground of general situation, critically reviewing
the newest materials and evaluations available.
In several sections, the Latvian soldiers and the use of their warfare skill in
foreign interests and on even opposite front lines is evaluated.
The warfare on the Latvian soil in
1944
is particularly analysed,
examining events that, until now, have been hidden, biased and partially
evaluated.
Particularly, the events on Kurzeme strategic springboard are
weighed, as well as the question why until this day the strategic value
of this springboard and the struggle for it is deliberately diminished
and deformed. The events of the last hours of the war in Kurzeme are
reviewed.
In a separate chapter, the exploitation of Latvians on the German
soil and also the dramatic breakout of Latvian troops to the allied forces
are analysed.
The book considers also the endeavour to renew Latvia's indepen¬
dence at the final period of war and the role of various factions in the
dramatic events of that time.

The chapter that is dedicated mainly to the Latvian soldiers exam¬
ines the ground rules of the warfare and the place of the minor states in it,
the role of the Latvian commanders and the villainous reprisal to Latvian
soldiers for their merit in the Soviet system, as well as the murder of
Latvian origin highest rank officers with a savagery that the world has
not seen. |
